Trying to switch from Windows OS to Ubuntu to run steam games.
I'm getting tired to windows and their forcing us to upgrade and now that we can not upgrade from win 7/8 without paying for win10/11 and that steam is not supporting running on these systems. I'm trying to convert to Ubuntu 22.04 ( don't want to deal with the M.S. version issues any more)

Problem: some of the games wont run , play smoothly or load.
Question: is Proton the only option or could one use Wine or something else?

games and issues:
System info: evga I5 2.8MHz, 16 Gig
system os: Ubuntu 22.04 lts
Video card: an older GTX card, but all games play well on windows (so not a real issue here as I see it)

7 days:
loads but the video card driver flickers (blocks of lines) or stutter or would hang ( this appears be a video driver issue)
tried to install the Linux nvidia driver for the card but the .RUN does not install or if it seems to install does not fix the issue.
as a test, I did a clean install using windows 10 (selected "no key" option) and 7 days plays fine no flicker no hang and play is smoothly.

S.M Civ V:
run fine if I use proton 9 or 10

S.M. Civ VI:
Crashes when it tries to load with a fatal error.

if i have to tweak every game I want to play , it will be a real pain.
I've been using the ProtonDB to see what game are out of the box but most of mine are listed as Gold. (need tweaking) and the only tweaking I can see is use different version of proton.

so, I'm really looking to see if there is a easier way to install and play steam game on ubuntu.
or is proton the only real option.

TIA
Tim

Proton is downstream from Wine. If it has problems, you can give Glorious Eggroll a try.

Which GPU you have is quite important. Linux gaming heavily relies on Vulkan, Nvidia GTX 700 and older does not (fully) support Vulkan.

Did you format your game drive properly? What are actual PC specs?

Have you used Proton Tricks yet?

Have you tried Glorious Eggroll?

Have you tried older versions of proton for older games?

The civilisation games shouldn’t need proton. That said, civ 6 ran better using proton than the native install for me.

Where there isn’t a native version of the game proton is definitely the way to go. I wouldn’t go following tweaks and stuff from protondb though. People faff about too much.

Ubuntu uses a commercial support model, they will try charging you for free updates. No one uses Ubuntu. Debian or Arch is probably a better option.
You get 5 years of updates by default, and as a normal user can sign up for 10 years for free through Ubuntu Pro.

Only business users pay.

I've been using Ubuntu for almost 20 years now. First Gnome, then Xubuntu. I use Debian for servers. You can safely ignore the Pro Support.

I have used several distributions over the past 30 years, which is how long I have been using Linux. They all have their strengths and weaknesses. However, problems were always really just personal skill issues.

You have to embrace each distribution and use it as it is intended. That can be hard work, which is why people are reluctant to switch, myself included.

Of course, it doesn't make sense to completely overhaul a distribution. There are different approaches. You have to choose what works best for you.

TL:DR I was unable to compile SteamOS from source code (on any device) many years ago because of missing precompiled binaries that targeted specific UUIDs and hardware identifiers. Like for example a very specific LCD display.

It's not free and it's not open source. It's a commercial ecosystem that you can maybe play some steam games on.

Valve has money and could deliver good drivers for their devices . Other Linux developers cant afford this . Linux developers dont have money because the OS is free for home use . That s why Linux will be forever half polished thing .

@hackerman555 , it s so natural you get only the headers as source code

Some of he takes in this thread are wild.

Linux is fine for gaming.

OP, make sure the drive you put your games on is formatted properly. I use Ext4 for my game drive.

I would discourage "dual booting" OS's. If you want to leave Windows, then do it fully. Partitioning drives to dual boot can cause a lot of issues and headaches. Windows doesn't like to share.

If you're stilling having issues, then Proton versions are likely the issue. You can try some games if they have a Native Linux version, but I've found in most cases using Proton is still better than using Native Linux.

If you're having troubles with the latest stable version of Proton you can try going to Proton Experimental.

If you're having issues still, you can go to your preferred search engine and look up "Glorious Eggroll", it's gonna be a github, download it and place it within your Proton versions folder on your system, then use it. You can look on YouTube for guides on how to do this if you're not sure.

If you're STILL having trouble after that, then whatever system you're using, download the Proton Tricks for that, and see if you need to use any Proton Tricks for the game. This may be listed on ProtonDB or, if you're feeling daring, you can talk to a reputable AI about it. That should be a last resort though, as AI still make things up sometimes. Try not to run terminal commands, or download programs, that you do not understand.

Ubuntu is iffy sometimes in their practices, but use whatever distro you want. I use Mint based on Ubuntu and it works just fine. Linux users do have strong opinions on distros though, so it's just something you have to bear with literally anytime you ask for help.

Anyway, that's my advice. Good luck.

@hackerman555 , why should i . i m fine with Windows . Also others code is hard to perceive . Also i parted with coding long ago . Because of the CRT monitors . Now as a user it is easier .

we here in EU , have billions budget , the same -USA , Japan, China . Why doesnt anyone provide money to Linux so the Microsoft monopoly disappears ? As if no one is interested.

i guess Donald Trump is the least interested . No saver

Video card: an older GTX card
Why do people open technical threads and never mention their video card? With this kind of logic, I'm not surprised at the outcome.

If you want the best experience, to where everything is plug n play, you want to use all AMD hardware. AMD graphics, AMD chipset, AMD CPU.

Nvidia Linux support is way behind AMD. So far behind that I find Nvidia unusable in comparison.

For "older GTX" or whatever this mysterious GPU is, I would try pop!_os.
r.linder 11 月 26 日 上午 9:02
Nvidia is fine as long as you have a recent gen, older generations have issues with the drivers and don't work with the open source modules, only the proprietary modules

I've used Linux exclusively with Nvidia for the last three years and have no complaints, but that won't be the case for people with a much older card
