at least with the new steam machine it is just a fully unlocked console/pc that you can do everything on similar to PC, same as the new xbox coming in a few years, only playstation will remain as a locked down PC (console)
The ROG Ally is a handheld gaming device but is also a full PC as you can install whatever you want on it and dock it and use it like a console or PC.
Technically everything is a PC but with differing levels of being locked down.
coz… I’m sick of pc headaches. tho I still will use my rog ally z1e for emulation. Got some older titles I like to play. anyways point being… this will create confusion for people that think It’s a legit console. It’s not.
lol I don’t want full windows on a console XD sounds like a nightmare. SteamOS it’s better but… it can’t play everything. disclaimer, I’m a Linux and mac user, but I understand the majority plays anti cheat games.
The current generation of consoles have basically the same hardware that PCs have. If you can somehow unlock them and install Windows 11, then for all intents and purposes they can be considered PCs.
What is your definition of “console”? Because the Steam Machine looks like a console for me.
Steam Machine, just like Steam Deck, is a console-like PC experience. Steam Deck sure seems to be doing fine and I think Steam Machine will do fine as well. Also, the more people using SteamOS devices with Steam Deck, Steam Machine, and Steam Frame the less developers/publishers can shove their heads up their asses to ignore the platform.
Obviously all of the Steam Deck verified games will be g2g immediately for Steam Machine. ProtonDB lists over 7,000 games as Deck Verified and over 27,000 games as playable.
Sure, there are absolutely those "console gamers" who only get a console to play Madden and COD. But there is a very large amount of console gamers who are not COD crackheads and will just play whatever games are available on the platform they have; and there is plenty on Steam that works perfectly fine on SteamOS vis proton.
I play on the steamOS, and before deciding the get the ps5, I played like Batman Arkham knight on my brother’s ps5.
Not even a competition, it’s much better on the console side. I’m the type of guy that doesn’t like to go through settings to change, well, everything… I just want to play, and the quality is already great on my monitor with my brother’s ps5. pc games is great for some people, and console games are great for some people. But would never say to a buyer that a console is a PC or a pc is a console.
But hey… prices are not even out yet but damn! The news outlets are creating a lot of confusion there’s no doubt about it.
That was intentionally tongue in cheek because of the "everything is an Xbox"; rather than giving an example the other way around such as Ratchet & Clank on an Xbox.
On this point specifically, most modern games that have a plethora of graphics settings now will do an auto-detect of your hardware to adjust settings automatically to what should be a good experience on your hardware. You don't need to go in an tinker if you don't want to; but you can often tune things a bit better if you so desire.
Also, back with the original Steam Machine and the Steam Controller when Valve was creating the Steam Input system to abstract game input from specific controllers/KBM; they created user generated input profiles that you could download for various games. It has been suggested numerous times and something Valve engineers have said they have an interest in exploring to implement a similar system for the per-game QAM performance settings.
Lastly, I don't think news outlets are creating a lot of confusion. For the majority of people the Steam Machine will function like a console; Just like for the majority of Steam Deck owners it functions like a hand-held console. Also I think a decent amount of the actual quality journalists in the gaming space are presenting tempered expectations and some skepticism; e.g. Digital Foundry's coverage.
From the specs; I'd expect a price point of around $650 - $899. I think Valve might take a hit again on the lower capacity model as a loss leader like they did with the 64GB Steam Deck. So potentially could be less; but I wouldn't hold my breath on that.
