But the Steam Deck is a really really good controller. The only thing I'm worried about is hitting the touchpads accidentally.
On the Steam Deck, the touchpads are actually game changers for using PC-oriented UIs in videogames, using desktop mode and typing on a virtual keyboard. The touchpads are also analogue buttons, which comes in handy for emulation of certain consoles, if you don't want to use an OG PS3 controller.
The DualSense's touchpad is nice for mouse control, but is unergonomically placed for any serious use. Also, as for the other mainstream controllers, only the more expensive Edge/Elite versions (and some third-party controllers) offer back paddles.
With SteamInput, you can set stuff like macros, button combos/chords, layer shifts and even extra menus on these grip buttons, which multiply the functionality of face buttons or automate certain things in games. For example, I use the grip button in OG San Andreas to not have to button-mash for running and also use it extensively in simulators like ETS2 to cramp all the functionalities in a controller format.
Depending on the developer, there might even be special official layouts including extra functionalities for those grip buttons.
Why? It actually uses a normal layout instead of the xbox abomination. It doesn't get more ergonomic than that.
I'd use one for stuff like Minecraft and Subnautica, but certainly not for Crysis or Doom PB.
with trackpad aiming i have been able to easily compete against Keyboard&Mouse players in Free Aim lobbies on GTA Online. it's been amazing.
Also D-pad quality is a question.
There's nothing superior about KB/mouse when playing games like Devil May Cry.
The real PC nerd knows that KB + Mouse is not the strength of the PC platform, but the ability to select best tool for the job whether it's a wheel, HOTAS, KB + Mouse, Arcade Stick or a controller and having variety of manufacturers to choose from.
