Depends on what you need it to do. If you just need a network attached storage device the PI can do that.

Maybe Nextloud is something interesting for you. I'm using it on my Pi for years.

What do you mean by NAS?

As previous two comments.. what do you mean as NAS, and Nextcloud works well. I use it for photo sync from iPhone and files. Just set it up in a container. I’ve used it for years. Not a single hiccup. Combined with Baikai and iCloud isn’t needed for me.

although doable , i think it s not worth it . You re looking for a cost saving solution but in this line LAN would be 1Gb i.e. max 125MB/s .Why ? i m sure you dont want this

What would a typical person at home need to transfer huge amounts of data for? Regularly and for long periods?

Yes, they even make sata nas hats.

faster is better for backups and file sharing

but a pi can work at slower speeds if you dont care how long it takes
start the backup and walk away

It can work as a NAS, but it is essential to compare it to Intel 100s or goldmont counterparts, may be a more economical option or different form factor with SATA ports in mind.

You could, but there's plenty of better options.

Many routers let you plug in a USB storage and access the files over the network (or remotely, if you can get NAT to cooperate) with an FTP page.

You'll be limited by the network, the Pi will do just fine.

no you would be limited by the arm cpu. it doesnt have the horses. if the cpu is weak so will be the network card. it never will reach usable speed.

A Pi 5 literally will saturate a 1Gbe netrwork as a Pi NAS can write at 850MBs. Even random 4k writes are well above the speeds of a 1Gbe network.

This has already been benchmarked and documented.

OK. You proved me it's decent.
