Crashing midgame no reboot just crashing and a blackscreen
Hey everyone.

I hope I am in the right forum...

I bought a new (PC Captiva 89-503 - no modifications done yet) in roughly the middle of this year (Around july) after quite some time since my old one pretty much died for good.

I only have steam games and we tested with Furmark, Prime 95, etc to see if something crashes

We let Furmark run at my fullscreen for 2+ hours and no issue. Prime95 had no issue either for running over half an hour.

The amount of electricity it gets shouldn't be an issue either, as i can draw from more than enough to satisfy the 850 wats it says it needs.

Anyways.

The issue is that it just shuts down (No rebooting just a black screen and the PC is off) but it shouldn't be temps. (HWInfo etc)

I disabled steam overlay which at least let me enter the games again. But I wasn't spared the crashes, after some time.

(Tested with Crown and Adventure and Dragon Quest 3 Remake. So nothing really demanding either and no they arent even running on the highest setting was trying that too. Additionally it happened with others games too before Thaumaturge (not max settings), a chinese game with english translation, etc So a bit of everything.)

I sadly don't have none steam games, so i can't test without them, but after various tests, my brother is very sure its an issue with steam.

I am using the Nvidia driver (And yes the old one we did completely remove before installing it.) and i noticed that some people said there are crashes because of that, so i disabled steam overlay in settings - ingame. Which allowed me to even enter towns in Dragon Quest 3 Remake.

The weird thing is occasionally it works and occasionally not (The crashes shouldn't be from temp nor from malfunctioning Hardware). The issues have been there since i bought the PC and yes it was completely clean than.

We updated everything 2 days ago (Drivers, advanced options updates microsoft, etc)

There is no issues with temps. Nor anything I can think off that causes it.

I am at the ropes end here what is causing it.

I am not even playing demanding games yet.

Can anyone think of anything that's causing it?

The only thing i didn't try is cleaning it again (Which is on the agenda too, but it probably won't help), but since this has persisted even when it arrived and was clean (And yes we looked at that too and cleaned it and removed all that could be an issue at the time) i am not sure what is causing it.

During the Furmark test it was for 2+ hours at ~84-87 temp wise and idle its around 33-35°C
Fans didn't hit their limit either.

During the Prime95 testing there was no issue either.

And yes the Nvidia update was done too, as was any other update we could think of. Nothing on my PC that can interfere with games either.

We tried throttling the PC too, which didn't help either. So it isn't overdrawing.

Can anyone think of something else?

Concise overview without rambling:

PC crashes without rebooting just a blackscreen and you can just start it again.

PC Captiva 89-503
(R7 7800X3D 32GB/2TB SSD RTX 5070Ti Win 11)

Furmark Test done 2h+ fullscreen, Prime95 test done 30+ min, Problem persisted since i bought it in around july.

Nvidia driver installed and up to date (Old one removed before installing it)

Was completely clean at the time it started and everything was removed that could be an issue.

Steam overlay was disabled in settings -in game (After I could enter towns again in DQ 3 Remake) but it didn't solve the problem. (But crashes became less consistent. Before I had crashes whenever i entered a town for most the time. Now not as much.) The last crash was in Crown and Adventure. (Usually the crashes happen when i change the map ingame. pretty much all of them were than.)

And yes it never crashes outside of games on steam.

Please, does anyone have an idea what else I can try?

Thank you very much to anyone that can help.

Have a good day everyone.

lets try turn off XMP, or turn on XMP, why turn off if you have instability, why turn on because maybe you lack of voltage on your CPU, and ram
try put one RAM into your slot 4 only, and test again

Hello there!

Thanks for the suggestion.

Talked with my brother about it and he did state that the system should be stable under stress (Thus the stresstests on furmark and prime95) and that XMP is already off.

The thing is that disabling steam overlay certainly helped and since i read that it causes issues with the nvidia drivers (which are up to date). He is convinced its an issue on steams end. Edit: But it didnt solve it for good.

Don't have additional RAM lying around right now, but it shouldn't be an issue since there is 32 GB of ram that seem to be working under the stress tests.

Have a good day.

Hello there!

I am referring to posts like this i found after searching for the symptoms:

https://psteamcommunity.yuanyoumao.com/discussions/forum/1/601905151053177514/

It helped in the snese i can even start it, but the symptoms of simply turning off persist. Tho i cannot trigger them reliably anymore.

It just happens. No issue with the temps either. We also tried throttling the usage of electricity and it didn't help either. So it is very likely something else.

But the stress tests showed, that it works outside of steam. Which is the confusing thing.

Have a good day.

specs?

post a cpuz validation link
http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html
cpuz -> validate button -> submit button
it will open a browser, copy the url (address) and paste it here

xmp with 2 matching dimms is stable most of the time
its extremely rare for ram to go bad

but xmp is only overclocking the cpus memory controller
its just sets the ram to run at its rated speed, timings and voltage

Hello there!

Sadly i can't post said link as it can't read the RAM somehow. (So i cant press submit so it comes to the E-Mail)

We just ran Memtest86 because of that, which came back with 0 mistakes. So it is operational.

AMD Ryzen 7 7780X3D
NVIDIA Ge Force 5070 TI
Lexar DDR5 RAM 32GB Kit (2x16GB) 6000 MHz
Windows 11
Nvidia graphic driver.

It certainly seems like a steam issue given we ran Furmark, Memtest86 and Prime95.

Have a good day.

Hello there!

It simply doesn't let me submit, and when i googled it, it said, that its a Ram issue. Which is why we ran Memtest86.

Nvidia should be up to date. We updated everything a few days ago.

Will check later if NVIDIA released a new one the last 2-3 days..

Have a good day.

dont use windows update for drivers, it always grabs generics which just 'work' but never as intended or for full functionality

Hello there!

We installed them through the advanced options. So it should probably be the correct driver.
And as i said, Nvidia driver was installed through their tool and updated through it. Edit: And yes as i said we deleted the old windows driver first.

Anyone knows how to contact steam itself for this? We did quite a few tests, so talking with a human from their side may be helpful. Just through a support ticket?

:/

Have a good day.

what advanced options?

windows update never has correct drivers

there is one generic driver compatible for all realtek sound cards on mobos, but specific drivers can add rear 5.1 or spdif and have more input options
same thing for network and chipset drivers

the mobo mfg will have the correct ones for all the options the boards devices can support
Urthor1996 11 月 7 日 上午 3:18
Hello there!

As far as i heard from my brother the drivers installed should come from the producer delivered by MS.

Also do you have an idea under which category I could write a support ticket? Cause i am decently sure it isn't an issue with the hardware, nor should the drivers be.

Maybe under steam client and steam client crashes? Closes I can see.

And to answer the question, there is under windows updates an option > advanced options under which we updated everything.

Have a good day.

There is a massive thread about Steam Overlay causing black screen crashes.
https://psteamcommunity.yuanyoumao.com/discussions/forum/1/601905151053177514/

However, this is likely unrelated to your issue given/if:
- you've updated NVIDIA drivers to 581.57 or past that version number, which should include a fix for this bug,
- you've taken additional steps such as disabling Steam Overlay, disabling GPU acceleration, and other common workarounds.

Which NVIDIA driver version do you currently have?
It's important to use NVIDIA's official methods for updating drivers, such as NVIDIA App or the official GeForce download page.

Hello there!

Currently i have the 581.80 Nvidia driver which should be the newest updated through their tool.

Have a good day.

Hey there!

Sorry for pumping this, but i recently tried to see if it is an issue with the pc or not.

I am 95% sure that it isn't my PC now - At least not from the usual issues. Ram and electricity should be working proper.

Must either be an engine issue or something else. Maybe the Nvidia drivers, or the 5070 ti, are causing stupid issues or steam is interfering and running something in the background i dunno. (Will see if I can run the gothic 1 remake demo for the same duration on steam, already downloaded it.)

Why am I saying this? Made a gog account and played the gophic 1 remake demo on high settings for graphic etc for 1h and 30min with no issues. Which i am decently sure is heavier than dragon quest 3 remake, which crashes immediately upon bootup. Probably will buy games from gog to see if it is a steam issue or a issue with an engine.

I played it on high btw. Which should be far more energy intensive than bloody dragon quest 3 remake.

Sadly gog doesnt seem to have dragon quest 3 remake so i cant test that.... hm maybe I should see if they have thaumaturge. I can also say that the gothic 1 remake demo starts up to with the same settings on steam too. Will play a bit of it later on steam as well, continue from my save if possible. Think it is. Because i am curious what it is now.

Will edit tomorrow or write another post how it went with steam.

If anyone knows what is causing this I would be happy to hear it.

Edit: My old laptop can run Dragon Quest 3 remake tho barely. Sooooo yes. Interesting whats going on.

Edit2: The demo of Gothic 1 Remake didn't cause any crashes after me trying to kill everything in sight, in game of course. Still no issues. I wonder what the heck is going on exactly. (Steam this time 1 further hour)

Have a good day.
