Mikrotik, Fritzbox.

Mikrotik being aimed more at advanced users and enterprise. Fritzbox is targeted towards consumers.

This means that Fritzbox routers mostly just work out-of-the-box and do not require any additional setup. Mikrotik routers are shipped vanilla and with more settings exposed to the user, you will have to configure them to be secure and meet your needs.

I had a spare computer and turned it into a router. Ipfire. Fairly simple. Just need 2 network cards

Just generate different .ovpn files for the machines you wish to use it. The ovpn client is available for nearly everything.

I understand, but having it all connected into a single router for things such as mobile, smart tvs, tablets, game systems and such.

Would be ideal.

Ubiquity or custom firmware for your current router.

It is possibe. It all depends on the use case.

I used to have a cheap virtual private server with openvpn & wireguard installed.

I could access resources at home.

Now I use zerotier, which can be configured to act like a vpn.

My router is opnsense, wit the zerotier plugin.

All access is throug the router with a single https port forward (from zerotier network) and reverse proxy server.

Interesting, what would you suggest I should do?

I'm not too deep/tech savy, but I don't mind learning.

Both pfsense and OPNsense free firewalls support it. Reuse an older computer and do it free.
