You can however install it on any PC with specs similar to the Steam Deck, it will need an AMD CPU, AMD graphics and an NVMe drive.
But just use any other Linux distro, it will provide the same user experience.
I think I'll just better wait for an official release then, I'm not in a rush.
There's no need for SteamOS to be the launching point, it's not going to do anything that those (or other distros) don't already do. It won't be more "user friendly" than anything else you can currently find, and it won't "work better" than any other Linux distro.
If you want to use Linux, you can use it now, with better results, than you'd get from using SteamOS a Steam Deck, or SteamOS for PC (when it's released).
Just install bazzite, it does everything steam os does and more, it's even more up to date usually as well.

I recommend Bazzite over SteamOS for desktop PC right now.
SteamOS can be installed on PC but it must be full AMD and it will delete all (or random) drive without giving an option for Dual Boot.

IDK what Bazzite looks like but I had manjaro installed on this drive before I put steamos on it and when steam os booted up I thought it booted into manjaro. It took me a couple of minutes to realize it indeed booted into steamos. I was stoked af. Manjaro (plasma/kde?) is my fave desktop environment.

Right hand side, scroll down, CachyOS and Mint, in the number 1 and 2 spots.

OP why not just install Ubuntu or something?
Also what GPU are you using? Is it a reasonably modern AMD GPU?
people keep saying this
and while technically true,
it is
"Just linux"
optimized by steam for steam and its gaming
i have been using linux for years now and am eager to try it to see what they did
i can ♥♥♥♥ around with other builds all day
but with so many possibilities available
that does not mean i can get get the performance this will
and people jumping from windows will have a rough time as it is
distro hopping to find the right one can be daunting
then finding the desktop you want
anyways
steam has a built in fan base that can help linux get off the ground big time
op, i am with ya
cannot wait to try it when it is ready
