They did say they intend to release it as a generally available OS at some point but there is no release date and that is operating on “valve time”. So I wouldn’t hold your breath for a desktop release for it in the near future; but it’s likely still progressing as they’ve been making regular updates for it on SteamDeck for 3+ years now.
Or just take any of the normal distros and set up the Steam and Proton components yourself if you prefer mutable root.
Not exactly. Mods generally work fine, but it's annoying having to go though the 'add as a non steam game' menu to run mod packages.
The Plasma desktop could use a plugin where you could just right click an .exe and tell it to run through proton and treat the z:\ games folder like windows c:\

Quite a headache, but works beautifully.
Also, the missing esc, ctrl and alt keys on the popup keyboard is a pain in the ass if you need to edit a text config file. Who the heck decided a dedicated emoji menu key was needed, but they weren't?
If you play Bethesda titles, there are forks of MO2 which work perfectly fine with Fallout and Skyrim. There's also r2modman for games that have mods on the Thunderstore.
Faugus Launcher does this. You directly run an .exe file with it and it'll run it through Proton.
Yes. Thank you. Also, protontricks simplifies it as well.
I hope they do more specially with the Lenovo Go S running steam OS. I’ve been trying to run my single player games from my Amazon account and GOG without any success. Some will start but crash right after…
jokingly!!!
:-D
...lets wait...forever :-/
The successor to Vortex, the Nexus Mods App[nexus-mods.github.io] is currently in the works and will have native Linux support. You can also try other solutions like the Limo Mod Manager[github.com], though it's not quite as robust and dummy-proof as Vortex.
