Is star link internet crap for gaming?
If you have subscribed to that, what is it like when relying on satellite connection for both online live service play (as in multiplayer) and casual gaming? I've heard that star link internet sucks, is the subscription even worth the money? How does satellite connection hold up in comparison to oceanic fiber optic cable internet?

Satellite is horrible for gaming, the latency is insane, i mean you have to wait for the signal to go into outer space and back, you're looking at 100s of ms of latency.

… not quite outer space but it’s still going to take a lot longer than copper or fibre.

very bad

it may have high speeds, but extremely high latency
probably worse than dialup for games

get cable or fiber

I checked this a bit back and it said average ping was 30 to 70ms with the best reports 20 to 30ms, depends on location/conditions, pretty good for satellite.
Also you connect to a ground station as a user and the ground stations connect to the satellites, so how close you are to a ground station has affect.

What country are you in?

Satellite Internet will have issues in bad whether. Where as a 5G cell service would not. Such as TMobile 5G Home Internet

i do not have it.....BUT i play with a guy on battlefield 2042 that is on STARLINK and he never really disconnects or rubber bands....he also plays helldivers on it....2042 never shows a ping over 90 for him....oh and he is in the middle of no where Montana

It's not bad. It's not like Satellite internet was 15 or 20 years ago

its liek mid. if you don't need it don't get it
I game on starlink, and get pings in the 20 and 30s, yes you can game on starlink.. if you have a good sky line., my sky is completely open no obstructions... i play games like call of duty and battlefield... it is amazing. i see downloads on steam hitting 35 to 40 mb speeds.. yes fiber is better but i have no other options where i live ..

You might be confusing the old GEO satellite internet. Geosynchronous orbit lies at a distance of 35,786 km from Earth, and all subscribers are sharing the same satellite. Starlink satellites are LEO, or about 2,042 km from Earth, less than 1/17th the distance. Obviously, such a satellite orbits the earth about 12 times a day, so there are a ton of them up there operating in a grid pattern, communicating with each other as well as the ground. As long as you have line of sight on one, you are connected.

Of course cable or fiber is better, but for those whom that's not an option, a LEO satellite connection is a very reasonable alternative.

Come to Turkey and see how you pray every day for Starlink. Millions of us here are waiting for Starlink. We have neither proper internet nor 4G connectivity. There are still places where 3G is used, and 5G is expected to arrive only 100 years from now.
