GPU in the 90 degree (i.e. hanging) position
There are some very interesting Thermaltake cases that mount the GPU in the hanging 90 degree position. This solves an obvious problem, namely, the size and weight of gpus in the horizontal position. There are countless videos showing the pcie connector broken. It doesn't take much to snap it, that's for sure.

A case like the CTE 750 also has a really intelligent layout because, instead of the customary rear single fan, it has a 3 fan layout of 120mm or 140mm, or even 2x200mm fans, meaning VOLUMES of air directed at the GPU.

Does anyone have thoughts or experience with this sort of a layout?

I wouldn't bother with it unless you want to add extra point of failures to your build and mess up the proper airflow of your case.

Do the proper research and if you must... best of luck.

While I appreciate the reply, nevertheless I find it a bizarre reply.

LOL, what point of failure???? LOL the design AVOIDS a point of failure in the PCIe connector by, you know, taking the weight off it.

LOL, what mess up of the air flow??? Do I have to spell it out for you??? It directs the air flow where you want it most, AT THE GPU!!!!!

most broken pci-e slots or connectors are the users fault

you can get support/mounts for longer heavier gpus to help prevent sag

I've used vertical mounts for a good few years now both air cooled (2080ti) and water cooled (3090/4090/5090), I use an ekwb vertical mount that also bolts into the pc chassis via the mobo mounting screws and it's crazy secure, though, not all vertical mounts are as sturdy.

You can still have droop on the gpu, but it's far less noticeable and far easier to counter, plus, far less risk of damage.

The only downside to vertical mounts is the size of the case, a bunch of cases have them built in next to the pcie slots which is an awful idea as it puts the fans right up against the glass in a bunch of cases, so I'd only recommend vertical mounting where this isn't an issue or via custom brackets, some might require minor cutting of the case also to get them to fit (aftermarket mounts I mean).

As for air flow, in most situations it's the same or better, the only time I found it problematic was with the 3090 as it had half of its memory on the back of the gpu and could get dangerously hot under crazy loads (like the limit of the chips, we are talking 100c to 120c here), but those loads were only reached if you were mining on the card at the time and a slim fan fixed the issue, I've never found any other issues, plus, I think it looks great, especially if you watercool.
