Installation graphic card
Greetings to all! Please tell me if I did the right thing. For sale, I decided to check the old video card, then I did the following. I installed the old video card with the power supply switch turned off, and I left the power supply cord in the power supply, only disconnecting it from the surge protector. The old video card was not working, so I decided to remove it from the PC. I forced the computer to shut down by pressing the power button on the system case. After forcing the computer to shut down, I turned off the power supply switch and disconnected the power supply cord from the surge protector. Then, after returning the working video card to the system unit, I tried to turn on the computer, moved the toggle switch to the on position, and pressed the power button, but the computer did not turn on. I realized that I had forgotten to plug the power cord into the surge protector, which prevented the computer from turning on. After less than 30 seconds, I plugged the loose power cord into the surge protector and pressed the power button again, and the computer turned on as expected.

If you don't smell burning electrical components (the smell is unmistakable if you ever burned an insulated cable wire you will never forget the smell) then everything is fine.

Even small sparks, while can be alarming, can also be harmless, unless constant. The smell is the telltale sign of electrical-based hardware damage (this also applies to automobiles).

I prefer my PCIe slots equipped with full-metal jackets.

Usually all you do is flick off the PSU back-switch to install hardware (some do not and that is when issues arise). Unplugging the PC from the wall outlet is equivalent to turning off the PSU power so there should not be any issue.

psu can be on, just make sure windows (or os) is fully shutdown, not in sleep or standby modes

psu off or unplugged is just more safety to ensure the pc is not on and running

without mains power the pc will not be on and its safe to do anything
the only thing you can really do is short the jumper to reset bios to defaults, no danger to the pc components at all

pressing the power button while off does nothing, some claim it drains caps or something, but all it does is tell the turn on circuit to turn on, but if the turn on circuit checks for anything, and mains is not present it will not turn on or attempt to drain other caps

just at the moment when I pressed the power button on the PC case itself, the toggle switch in the power supply was turned on, the cord itself was left in the power supply during the entire manipulation, it was only disconnected from the power strip. From pressing the button, it took less than 30 seconds for me to plug the power strip into the outlet. Was there any harm from this?

If the power cord was disconnected from the power strip during the swap why would you think there is any risk?

The PSU wouldn't receive any power anyways and whether the on or off switch is enabled wouldn't matter.

Before this manipulation, I just decided to check my old video card for sale. Then I described a situation where I inserted my new video card back into the case. I was afraid that there might be residual charge in the power supply, and when everything was connected inside the case, I turned the power supply switch to the on position and gave the command to turn it on, but I forgot to plug the power cord into the outlet. Can you imagine the scene? Was there any harm caused by this?

Could there be residual voltage in the power supply or in the power supply cord, because I gave the command to turn on the PC, and at that moment the cord was hanging from the power supply but was not plugged into the outlet?

What did you mean by shorting the jumper?
all mobos have a jumper to reset bios
usually like this, or 2 with pins, just short them for a moment and bios settings are reset to defaults

no thanks, I don't need to reset the bios. It's enough that I worry all day that I don't remember turning the power supply toggle switch to off, but I know for sure that the cord hanging from the power supply was not plugged into the socket when pressing the power button on the PC itself.

was just saying thats the only thing you can do to a mobo when it is not powered, which is no real harm
