xbox controller powers on without battery if its plugged in so yeah, its charge and data (trident symbol with the data transfer logo)

Is it a wired only controller or a wireless controller with a usb cable?
Might be an unsupported model or maybe you need to update the controllers firmware on the console if it works there.

This could give you an idea of what could be happening, mainly USB faults.

have you tried a different usb port on the pc?
or other device on the port or cable?

its a wireless controller with a USB, tested it on my medion erazer laptop with bluetooth and it works fine, sadly my console is broken but i can try and update the firmware on the laptop so it might work on the pc?

edit: must've been a lie, connected the "working" cable to the laptop and it doesnt want to actually connect via that, going to try every micro usb i have though to triple check

XBox Accessories App

But you tell me if that laptop is plugged in or not because if it is not plugged in, I am going to raise hell up in here. If what I said is true, the issue could be USB Power Management/Power Saving (I also wouldn't put "wake timers" on controllers either).

You do need that cable, or any data cable, to update the XBox controller firmware as it cannot be done over Bluetooth but can be done over WI-FI (dongle).

Very well could be a simple update problem (we can only hope it is that simple).

might try and look for my old g502 lightspeed cable as that should have data transfer and is micro USB

Depending on the Xbox One wireless controller you have; they did not originally use "bluetooth" (as in the vanilla protocol). You'd need the Xbox One Wireless PC adapter to use them on PC.

The later Xbox Wireless Controller for PC used either their protocol if you had the Xbox Wireless Adapter connected, or standard bluetooth. There was a firmware update for the Xbox One Wireless Controllers that added standard bluetooth support for Wireless PC connection.

https://support.xbox.com/en-US/help/hardware-network/controller/update-xbox-wireless-controller

If you have the Xbox One still; ensuring the Xbox One system software is updated to the latest version, it will allow you to wirelessly update the controller(s) to the latest firmware version which should then support standard bluetooth connection to your PC.

You should still be able to update the controller firmware via USB on your PC by installing the Xbox Accessories app via Windows Update; then connecting the controller via a regular data USB cable when you have the Xbox Accessories app running. This will install communication driver for the controller and will put the controller into firmware update mode to complete the update.

Also note, those Xbox One controllers aren't using the USB cable for the controller communication to the PC. So you'll need to also make sure your PC has bluetooth to wirelessly pair the controller; or get the newer Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows.

all xbox one controllers can use usb data

the orig x360 controllers were wireless only, the 'charge & play' cable was for charging the battery pack only

the first gen x1 were not bt, but easy to recoginze
if the plastic over the xbox button was not the same as the rest of the face buttons its not bt

if it has a share button or usb c port, it suporrts bt

OK... you were probably using some "power only" cable or something. Doesn't matter. If it's now working, don't do anything else :D
