Reenable HDMI sound output?
I upgraded my Win10 to 11. I was playing with the sound settings. I have the monitor speakers and an HDMI output to a receiver as output sound devices. I accidentally selected "do not allow apps to use this device" for the hdmi output. I can't find any way to undo that. When you open the advanced settings for sound, the monitor and the hdmi outputs are shown just like always. But the hdmi says not plugged in. Because I said not to use that device. When I pull the cable off and put it back on or power off the receiver and back on, I hear a sound from windows saying something has changed. So it does see the receiver. But it will not use it because it still says unplugged.

The device manager says there is nothing wrong. Everything is enabled.

I can find no menu that lets me add it back to the list of allowed devices. The add a new output sound device menu only allows to add bluetooth and wireless devices.

I have powered down and restarted the PC. I am thinking I may have to edit the registry to undo my mistake.

Help?

what gpu?

use the gpu control panel to enable sound on the hdmi port

then in windows audio control panel, disable all unused audio devices, and select the gpus hdmi as output

Can you post a picture? I found a place in my settings that said "Allow apps to use this device for audio" with a Don't Allow button and I clicked it but it turned into an Allow button to reverse it so not sure where you made your change.

I'm guessing you mean this, just flick the switch again, guess it will say allow instead.

Have you unplugged the hdmi cable revooted the computer then plugged it back in? It could be a hand shake issue. Happens to me on occasion with my denon and LG Tv

Thanks all. I fixed it. When I selected don't use it comptetely purged it from the system like it was never there. I had to remember how I set it up in the first place, years ago. The PC will not see just the receiver at first. I had to attach a monitor to the receiver then Windows sees it. Once everything is set up and Windows knows the HDMI output to the receiver is the default audio output then the monitor can be removed. Windows will call that second "monitor" as the receivers name. I assume Win 11 will work this way too. I will see. I did also find the menu for where to set up the speakers. Which is why I was playing withe the sound settings in the first place. Not sure if they moved it or I just forgot where it was.

Yes. That is menu I should not have touched. But it did not just come back since there was no monitor attached to the receiver as I just said above. The one for the real monitor can be toggled off and on again. Marking this as the answer so the thread will show as answered.
:)

I went into the AMD Adrenelin but it did not show as there because there was no monitor as I now said above.
