RX 580/590 driver issue question for users still using that card
Hi.

I'm trying to help a friend whose RX590 has the same issue mine used to have (I no longer have that card), it's quite a common issue.
His card is randomly crashing - not often, but occasionally. It happens more frequently while (or shortly after) playing certain Ubisoft games (he mostly plays The Crew 2, but I experienced the same issue particularly often with AC Origins and other Ubisoft titles).
I managed to solve the problem by downgrading the drivers to version 20.12.1 (when I still had the card).
Since that driver version is extremely old now, does anyone who experienced the same issues on certain driver versions know of a much newer one (ideally a recent one) that doesn't have these issues?

Thanks in advance

i had issues with AC Origins .Not sure whether it was the game or a storage issue(SSD quirk , not popular brand SATA) . After a long session of game play - 5 hours for instance , trying to quit the game froze the whole PC . Have never had such an issue with any other game . The GPU was NVidia. i finished the game .i like it but not willing to replay it ever .

Polaris has been abandoned eons ago, like AMD usually does. Your best bet is using Linux and the open source driver, which still has support.

no driver in the world can help if the thermal paste is dry and the grills dirty. did he clean it up? undervolting the card would also help I guess

It's not abandoned, they can still send feedback and the driver will get patched. The thing is that the driver is not on a regular release window and the patch date will be ~6 months or so, if it is a CVE the driver may be patched far sooner than that.

The driver was patched recently for MH: Wilds and other games that came out this year.

https://www.amd.com/en/support/downloads/drivers.html/graphics/radeon-600-500-400/radeon-rx-500-series/radeon-rx-590.html

Anyway send feedback and someone will look at it. What unsupported means at AMD is not the same as Nvidia or anyone else, it just means that a driver update is not on the release schedule that the other ones are and you won't get drivers with per-game optimisation on game releases.

Edit: Driver version btw for Win 10/11 Latest Adrenalin 25.8.1 (WHQL Recommended) AUGUST 2025

I know it is a common issue with some drivers for the RX 580/590 series cards. I had the same problem (back when my card wasn't very old), and I solved it by installing driver version 2020.12.1. - that fixed the problem. I error reported the problem to AMD every time it was offered, but it still wasn't fixed on current drivers when I sold mine/upgraded to another card. His card is running at better temperatures than my much newer Nvidia, so dirt/paste shouldn't be the problem.

When I still had it in use, if the "wrong" (correct & back then current, this was in ca. 2022) drivers were installed, PC hard crashed randomly very frequently when AC Origins or other Ubisoft games were running, but also occasionally in idle state. (System would just reset abruptly - no error message or anything, just a random reset). If however the old drivers were in use, the system worked perfectly even when running said Ubisoft titles that would near instantly crash the system on then-current drivers. Adrenaline usually showed a error message (can't remember what it said, but it didn't really help) when the system finished booting following a GPU-related reset.

If anyone who still has the card in use under Windows and has experienced the same problem (but fixed it with newer drivers), please let me know what driver version you're using. Thank you very much.

The current driver for that GPU and its family is AUGUST 2025, and yes that driver is from this year ...download it and try it? No reason not to unless you are a Windows 7 holdout. The driver is for Windows 10 & 11.
