Now's the time Valve
Valve needs to start releasing their own line of PCs with Steam OS. Do it while Microsoft keeps shooting themselves in the foot. Topple the current regime.

Even if valve can make one, it still needs to convince the whole industry to support its own OS, which is never gon happen anytime soon.

Kinda like MacOS and gaming. Despite a functional os, gaming devs still dont want to fully support MacOS

Would have more of an impact if they can partner with some PC builders, Starforge, CyberPowerPC, MSI, ASUS and so on, probably too many backroom deals and money involved to get on any super mainstream PC like Dell or HP for now.

steam os is just linux

better to just install linux and steam client, so you can get the drivers yourself instead of having the os try to get them without your control

They already tried that with the original steam machine initiative, and relying on those 3rd parties was a large reason it failed.

Valve releasing a console like PC akin to a much more powerful Steam deck without a battery, display, etc would be far more impactful than hoping 3rd parties are going to make a compelling product at a competitive price

There is no need or real purpose to do such a thing. All they might need to do and should do is work harder on releasing a Desktop version of SteamOS. Valve had nothing but headaches and profit losses with the Steam Machines.

Agreed, Valve has a great opportunity to push SteamOS into mainstream for Gaming PC's. A single purpose operating system that is secure, updated and maintained in the future. While improving hardware, drivers and games compatibility. User Friendly, Less Hassle, Pure Gaming!

Windows can still be used by those who are interested in the business purposes which is what windows was intended for in the first place. That is why different versions exist, Home, Pro, Enterprise.

Companies that took the initiative to create their own specialised operating systems that are distinguished from one another, each with their own purpose, Just like Windows, MacOS, Linux, Android, iOS, ChromeOS and homebrewed.

As it stands, SteamOS is still improving everyday, It won't require a lot of convincing once it becomes mainstream. Many people will switch over guaranteed.

Valve can then also create tools for developers that want to create games for the SteamOS platform, Just like consoles development.

They already missed the mark IMO.
The time to roll out an easy accessible SteamOS would have been a month ago. Now a lot of people have gone ahead and either "upgraded" to W11 or moved to other Linux distros.

They still have one more year to make Steam OS viable for PCs. If they can do that do that, then I might be interested, but it doesn't look good right now.

^ This

As again anyone with consumer editions of Win10 (Home, Pro, Educational) can do some very simple things to opt into the updates program for free to gain themselves another year (Oct 2026) of the security updates. If they even care. Even if you stay on Win10 and don't update it past this month, if not used for serious stuff and mostly for gaming then I really don't see a big problem yet. Just be mindful to keep Browsers, Apps and Drivers all up to date though still.

How it would benefit Valve?

If they can sell consoles, but with the advantage of using them as personal computers, why not?

Neither PS nor Xbox do that.
