why doesnt steam detect my mic on ubuntu
i just switched off of win10 to ubuntu 20.04 and everything is working fine (with proton and such), but for some reason in the voice settings my microphone (blue yeti) doesn't show up as an input device. my system settings show that it is connected and in use and that it picks up audio, and it also works in discord (i've ran discord's "test your mic" feature, so i know it works). my friends can hear me on discord. so why doesn't steam detect my mic? if it matters, i've played around a bit with pulse audio, didn't really find anything

ive spent like 30 minutes looking it up and all of the existing "answers" are about no actual audio going through instead of my specific issue of no DEVICE being detected

i do not want to use text chat in tf2 dude its basically pointless in casual 😭

1. Why version 20.04 when the latest versions are 24.04.1 LTS and 24.10?

2. Which version of Steam, make sure it's the .deb version and not flatpak

Configure the Mic in the OS and make it the default.

Then launch Steam and configure the Settings for Voice and PTT

24.x.x is from this year, what you're saying is from 2020

getting the proper version of steam is as simple as running 'sudo apt install steam'

makes sense, the snap version is the worst

if you have any more problems you might have better luck on the steam for linux forums, not many people that frequent the hwos forum use linux

Give Steam permission to access your mic

If you installed Steam from the Snap Store, mic access can be blocked by sandboxing.

Run:

snap connections steam | grep audio

If the :audio-record plug is not connected, connect it:

sudo snap connect steam:audio-record :audio-record

See this Steam mods, this is why you don't lock topics on a tech forum new info can always be added and people find help, I'm also kind of curios how you got the job and don't even know this and why search function exists, you don't even follow the guide lines on forum moderation set by Steam on their own page.

"Why do moderators lock and delete discussions?
Respectful arguments are a constructive and beneficial aspect of the Steam Community. When a discussion thread veers off a constructive path or is causing frequent disrespect between players, Steam moderators will lock the thread.

If a discussion thread contains prohibited topics, spam, or is otherwise not constructive, moderators may also delete specific content in an effort to preserve the conversation. However, there are cases where removing the thread itself is necessary."

Nothing about locking because we are "confused" that's some new weird take you new gen of mods have.

They get locked usually when it gets reported and there's multiple posts that aren't even adding anything of value to the post, like ranting about them just doing their job. If nobody reports then it's unlikely to get closed.

It's been basic forum etiquette for many years all over the internet that you don't bump or necropost old threads that aren't getting focus, they just haven't added it to their rules pages but they do enforce it. Rarely is it ever the case that someone comes along years later with a solution, most of the time it's either off-topic or someone else asking if the OP found a solution.
