Xbox One Controller
My Xbox 360 controllers are getting pretty beat up, I'm thinking I may go and get an Xbox One controller/wireless adapter (now that Microsoft has an "official" one for Windows) and see how that works as a replacement. I'm expecting a certain amount of incompatibility due to it being a newer controller with newer drivers, particularly with older games... but I'm curious if anyone around here has an Xbox One controller on their PC and can let me know their experiences with it?

Does it play nice with the Steam Overlay and Big Picture Mode?

The Xbox 360 and Xbox One controllers have the same compatibility with PC games. They may have different drivers, but those drivers actually send the exact same input signals to the games.

I recognize the existence of Xinput and that both controllers use it, but I've already seen noticeable differences between driver versions for the same Xbox 360 controller... so I understand things won't be "perfect" with the Xbox One controller.

You're saying I can pretty safely jump to the Xbox One controller though, without any real noticeable hurdles? Outside of aesthetics? Do you have one?

There is virtually zero differences when it comes to overall gaming compatibility between a 360 and One controller; it can come down to Drivers and overall Config; that is about it.

Games already setup and/or configured for your 360 controller (the way you have it already) you should be ready to go, nothing special to do.

If you intent to use One controller wirelessly; then I'd suggest getting a lithium rechargeable battery pack for it and not rely on using 2xAA batteries, as well as a USB "Charge Only" cable.

For what it's worth, I actually have rechargeable AA batteries always on tap. So I'm not too worried there.

Though my 360 gamepads are a little loose in the battery pack area, and certain brands of AA battery vary enough in physical size that the batteries swim a little bit... making them disconnect if the controller shakes a little too abruptly. I wonder if the Xbox One pad is any better in that regard.
