The UI is constantly evolving, it's been the "blue era" in some form or another for so long that it isn't even recognizable.
VR is still in a super niche state, so work on it should not interfere with development for the vast majority of users. https://psteamproxy.yuanyoumao.com/hwsurvey/ There are more mac users than VR users.
Tl;DR follow your own advice:
At some point it will be the new smart phone.
Video gaming has become stale.
The fact is, Oculus offers a far more engaging style of games but they don't have modern graphics.
Whoever can bridge that gap, along with making them more powerful while lighter and compact, will have a decent shot at growing that market.
Not every "new thing" has to cater to mainstream right out the gate. It can be a slow build before exponential popularity turns something mainstream.
It's the nuclear fusion of entertainment, not the smartphone. Great for a niche crowd of enthusiasts, but it needs a lot more of a massive breakthrough than the iterative development going on to get popular.
You explicitly said that you wanted to edit the video on your phone while playing the game. That's two different devices which may not be on the same LAN during a very latency and concentration sensitive video game match. Multiple recipes for disaster.
