Set the default setting for all users to be blocked
Since so many people want an echo chamber, Valve should instead have it so that everyone has every other user blocked by default, and require people to curate their own whitelist of users.

It would end people calling for echo chambers!

Since people still somehow fail to understand this. It's my fault because I created this topic in an upswing on a downward spiral that has lasted 8 days...

This topic is about giving those people something they want... but in the worst possible way. Malicious compliance if you will.

In fact, here's an addendum. Make it so that someone who calls for a two way block immediately has everyone removed from their friend list and has everyone blocked, forcing them to create a whitelist.

That is called a friends only setting for your profile. Only those on your friends list can contact you.

These discussions are public discussions, where anyone with an account in good standing can post.

Like Spawn mentioned, check your privacy settings in your profile. There you can block anyone you don't know. Don't demand this to be a standard setting, since many people don't want to do that.

Considering the majority of scams on Steam going on are requiring the friend request feature I think making people rely on it more would be bad unless they find a solution, since the current user-sourced workaround people recommend is to never accept friend requests ever.

Don't ever accept random friends request. There is a difference.

And it isn't about avoiding scams, especially as that was never stated by the OP or me. Those can happen in many ways, even if someone doesn't accept a random friends request. Most the ones I have read about were initiated on Discord, not even on Steam.

The suggestion from the OP also wouldn't prevent such scams either.

Thing is they might change their name to impersonate someone you know or would not want to ignore (such as “Steam Staff” and yeah that’s breaking the rules so is scamming though)

It’s a common thing in Facebook that they’ll spoof one of your family members accounts (name, profile picture) and you’ll think “I must have unfriended them by accident or they lost access to their account”

But as I told my neighbor that’s not your uncle …it’s a pod person from the planet mars.

So now it’s just “don’t add anybody” for my advice, unless you can third party verify it’s them.

Public forums. Blogs and groups is where you control who posts.

You failed to get what I meant by this. It was more of a monkey's paw. "Let's have everyone be blocked from the get go to force these people who want an echo chamber to create a whitelist"

I figured as much but like, it’s hard to know where to go with it that way.

If we take the proposal seriously for the sake of argument it’s easier to engage with, at least I think so.

Forums are for discussion ideally, so people desiring discussion will humor things which aren’t intended to be humored in order to serve those ends.

Mmmmmmm... delicious censorship.

Yeah, no.

No, really? I could? I didn't know that! Wow!

I mean there isn't a possibility that I created this topic in order to give people calling for two way blocking a monkey's paw solution or something like that and am really just fine with the one way blocking.

Noooo, not at all...

By the way, yes, all of that? Sarcasm. Because it is a Monkey's Paw solution to give these people what they want in the worst possible way.

That's called 'not using the forum'

You're not "giving" anyone anything because this is just a thread. Those people you're talking about probably won't even end up reading it.
Tito Shivan 12 月 6 日 上午 7:51
That has always been a possibility. People have always been able to create their own private Steam group and invite whoever they want to.

You may be surprised not everyone has the same impulse control.
