I don't want to automatically be subscribed to a discussion. I simply want a notification when someone quotes me

I feel like this was always a weird thing, how steam never notified you when someone replied to one of your messages. Seems like this should be the default on any forum-like platform. Instead what it does is it apparently started subscribing me to discussions i was active in.

User error or is it actually that way?

"Quotes" are really just stylish formatting for the benefit of users.
The forums don't actually have any functional quote / reply / @user system.

Either you are subscribed to a discussion and get notifications for every single post
or you're not subscribed to that discussion.

That's a good way of putting it yes, quotes re non functional formatting. I just feel like this defeats the whole point of a social platform of any kind. Some discussions have a lot of activity, you can't reasonably expect someone who doesn't have entire days to waste to go through pages and pages. It's basically a fire and forget thing, if anyone replies to one of my messages they will never receive a reply because i won't see it.
