Steam Machine Kit / User Build assembly
So on going talks about steam machine is the current thing.

With manufacturing and assembly costs nearly doubling the bottom lines of product expense, We as consumers need a break.

So the idea is similar to the original VR kits where Steam would ship them out and users would assemble there own VR headset.

Lets create a steam machine that customers build, learn and grow with both the set up creation assembly and linux /steam os installation to give the people using steam products that extra step needed in experience.

projects like these are fun and it gives customers a real chance to own the machine they purchase, experience the in's and out's of the machine and possibly even flexabilty to upgrade after purchasing.

well I hope this idea reaches some of the technical builders at Valve/steam

Cut your manufacturing and assembly costs, pass the cost cut to the consumer and put out price affordable / built it yourself steam machine's

As always have a wonderful discussion and i can't wait for all of the exciting replies.

Basically a rewording of: "sell me a brand new Steam Deck for 100" but this time aimed at the Steam Machine.

Valve specifically chose this version of the Steam Machine to be a pre-build with known factors such as cost.

People who want to build a custom PC already will. People who want a prebuilt PC don't want to assemble it. Most PC gamers aren't put it together DIY'ers. Valve probably doesn't want to deal with the support needs for people who give it a shot and do it wrong, or break something, or otherwise have issues.

All the support and need for spare parts will eat into those "savings" you imagine.

This is one of those don't hold your breath issues I'm wagering.

That isn't remotely accurate, at most its 10-15% for more custom PC builds, and with mass produced units with no variability its a fraction of that for the PC market since PC's are modular. At most your talking 5-8% added to the cost for assembly for these devices.

Sounds like your getting confused with stuff that is far more convoluted like cars where the manufacturing process is far more involved and makes up a much larger percentage of the price.

Anyone who wants to do this can already do so, and they are free to buy their own parts or buy kits like this and pick to make it as weak or as powerful as they want - https://www.amazon.com/ASRock-DeskMeet-X600-Mini-PC-Kit/dp/B0F69G4P7V

Then they can install Steam OS on it. The entire point of the steam machine its a pre-setup option to make it easy for people and to mimic the plug and play experience of a console.

Pretty much this. People who like to build PCs, who have the ability to build them will build their own , heck they already have built their own ValveBox

Likely cheaper than what Valve charges for theirs since they know the games they want to play.
The bulk of the Machine is not something I'd leave to a user to complete. And what's left really won't make much change in costs. It might even cost more when you consider having to create packaging for the individual components.

Don't forget breakage from people installing it improperly. I had a friend who worked at a newegg shipping center and you don't want to know how often they got damaged parts back they had to eat the cost on because people installed it improperly, didn't ground their tools first, etc.

I definitely wouldn't want to warranty a build your own Steam Machine, that's for sure.
Does Steam provide a soldering iron for the memory because I don't have one and I don't fancy buying one?

hahaha correct nothing says limited life hardware then sodar memory

so this is just basicly steam trying to cash grab at cheap out of date hardware which they can't sell in the steam deck any more.

whats the chances that steam machine uses the same out of date specs the steam deck has and the left over parts they couldn't sell

Mine will be limited to sitting a top of my current PC case doing nothing but looking good, once I get one of the Companion Cube skins for it. :spazwinky:

P.S
All hardware is limited, you can buy the latest brand new tech and it is already years out of date the moment it hits the shelves.

You really did no research on the steam machine at all did you? Its standard SO-DIMM laptop memory, snap in/out and easily upgradeable.

None, since the parts have been known for launch and are different.

They are allowed to be wrong, they just need to be fine with others not having the same belief.
