Authenticator shouldn't be lock-in excuse
Hello Valve team and Steam community,
I am a long-time Steam user who values security and privacy (and never posted anything here before).
Currently, Steam Guard requires the use of the official Steam mobile app for two-factor authentication. While I appreciate Steam’s commitment to account security, I would like to request support for interoperability with other authenticator apps.

Many users (including myself) prefer open-source solutions like Aegis Authenticator, and similar alternatives such as FreeOTP, Authenticator Pro, andOTP, and KeePassXC. These apps are highly secure, transparent, and being interoperable, give users more control over their authentication methods. Most other major platforms now support authentication via open standards like TOTP (Time-based One-Time Password), allowing users to generate codes through any compatible application.

Adding an option to export a QR code, or provide a manual TOTP setup key, would make Steam more accessible for those who prioritize privacy and security, and for those unable or unwilling to install the official Steam app (e.g. for device compatibility, custom ROMs, allergy to lock-in, or de-Googled phones). Is there a way Steam could enable support for open-source, standards-compliant authenticator apps in addition to the Steam mobile app?

This would address the needs of many users and align Steam’s security practices with best industry standards. Thank you for your consideration.

I hope Valve and the team will review this request and consider it for future updates.

Best regards,
me
