What you "expect", may not mean the current implementation is wrong or bad. No matter what a developer does, some people will think it's fine, some people will think it's awful. Who's right?

Personally, I find it easier to accept what is and if I want something different, either use a different app (if possible) or manage your own workarounds. IE if you want something done "right" do it yourself.

Sure you can complain and if enough people are also complaining then maybe that does warrant a change. But to be honest I don't hear to many people complaining about the amount of time chat history is kept. Not to say that means a lot, but often times when people don't like something and are complaining about it, it's pretty visible.

Longterm storage doesn't seem important for chats.

Saving anything important manually is always better.

Take a screen cap , save them, that is what you can do for now. A decent amount of business keep particular data only a couple of weeks and is typically data that is normally needed for a short period of time and doesn't require permanent storage, in this case chat messages on steam. We've had the same policy at a former place of employment regard temporary backups, they get auto-deleted after 2 weeks.
