Just like how the PS4 and PS5 wireless controllers can be used, while plugged in.
The controller has always been a wireless experience.
That is a different issue then what you stated in your OP.
The previous Steam Controller was actually less expensive then other first party game controllers ($50 vs $60-$70).
It isn't so much if it is wired or wireless these days, but the technology that goes into it.
The with new Steam Controller, it uses more modern tech then even Xbox or PS in theirs. Magnetic thumb sticks (far less likely to get stick drift), haptic feedback and the extra buttons, the only equivalent is the $200 DualSense Edge and that doesn't even use magnetic thumb sticks.
So, honestly, well worth it. I also love how it isn't the Xbox style controller. I never could get used the that thumbstick positioning.
