It used to be a feature. Valve took the Download/Update All button away when covid happened to save bandwidth and I don't think it is ever returning.

but im still hoping it becomes a thing again if it once was one

Set the games' updates settings to Immediate and updates won't be scheduled at all. The downside is you will have to change this setting for each game. It's a daunting task at first, but if you change them as you get scheduled updates, you'll find fewer and fewer being scheduled as time goes on.
