“Disable Auto-Updates” Option for Games
It would really help modders and players with modded games if we could disable automatic updates. When a game updates, mods often stop working or mess up the game.

A simple “Lock current version” toggle, or an option like “Only update when I choose to”, would solve this. It could include a warning about missing bug fixes, so users can decide for themselves.

Right now, the only workaround is to go offline or back up the game manually, which isn’t ideal. Please consider adding this feature for more player control and modding support.

Thanks!

They either have to do that, or let us play older versions. Mods or not, i have had more games ruined thru these updates than i can count.

Great idea :steamhappy:

Given that one of the main reason for Steam existing in the first place was to keep games updated. I doubt it will happen anytime soon.

That said, I 100% would want such a thing. Modding is a huge part of gaming now and that alone would be very handy.

I have a better solution:

Contact the developers of every game in your library, asking them to make older versions available.

"Better"

Indeed sounds better to copy paste the same email to whatever number of publisher/dev you got in your list of game.

Hell, half the publishers out there probably would re-direct it to the bin. XD

Even if I don't believe Valve will do it. It would make much more sense for them to do it being the middleman who control those aspects here.

Contact the game developers, they can release "old" version as betas, some games actually do that so people dont have to wait until their mods get updated

Guess you didn't get it... that's what the brightest individuals here usually suggest.

Right it is worth it to ask. I have one game, absolutely ruined by almost continuous updates, and did not know i can even play an old version. Being there was no older version beta.

But they walked me thru how to do it in another way, and it saved my game.

Apparently you can find older versions thru Steam db or something.

I do have to play it offline, and i do have to install the older folder when the game gets updated, seemingly every couple months. But at least it's available.

Having games always updated is the reason steam exists, and it's also one of it's biggest flaws (right after DRM---having to use steam at all). You could try using GOG for the games that are available, it's better than steam in every way except for the catalogue size and linux support.

Steam already provides this functionality through the use of Beta branches.
https://partner.steamgames.com/doc/store/application/branches

Any published game on Steam can make use of them.

They even made an update to the API to allow devs and users easier access to those branches and to switch between them.

Some developers make use of them, most don't, but the capability is there.

Dead Cells offers every version that ever released:
