SteamOS Linux Proton
Valve has decided to compete with Microsoft. However, its methods are peculiar.
When you have Windows Spyware installed, Microsoft knows everything about you - your hardware and software, what you're doing on your computer, and what networks you connect to. But if you're using Steam, Valve doesn't know anything about you. That's why their support has to ask for your OS version - they'd prefer not to even bring up Proton. Valve has no way of knowing if a game launched successfully, what software/hardware version you're running, or what your settings are. If you want to compete with M$, you need to rethink your methods. It's essential to analyze Steam's operations and identify what isn't working.
Yes, there are games that don't work in Proton, and if you plan to launch your own console based on SteamOS, you'll eventually have to address this issue. System crashes are a pretty serious problem, and I doubt most users will bother dealing with them through a forum.

So you want Valve to be more like Microsoft?
I understand that I'm expressing myself too complicatedly. So I'll simplify it: I want Steam to work, and if it doesn't, I want Valve to know about it.

^This.

OP you're literally asking for telemetry. Also Steam OS 3.0 is just Linux based on Arch Linux, and not crazy hard for any skillful group to make their own OS base on any of the distros.

I'm starting to understand that a normal discussion cannot achieve the desired result. So we will wait until the Steam Machine is released and then we will pretend that everything works. I don't play that much anyway, so my games are limited. Caliber: incompatible cheat shield., Marvel Rivals: crash, and many other games that freeze or crash. We'll wait until it becomes a widespread problem and then maybe we'll address it.
It's rather naive to think that Valve doesn't collect data... as if they haven't managed to create the shop's recommendation system, end-of-year game reviews, and all the metrics and telemetry that exist? Let me remind you that Steam uses a cookie system to begin with.
If only there was a place where people could post information about whether games work on proton
https://www.protondb.com/explore

Or for a way to contact Valve directly with more detailed reports
https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues

Or if there was like some sort to see on Steam store if game is compatible

Basically, I don't have a problem with something not working yet. If there are any issues, I would appreciate a warning before installation. I'll be happy to report anything if there's something to report.
The OS reporting that the shell crashed until it actually crashes probably won't make anyone happy. Where is the diagnostics? If the application has already been tested, I don't feel the need to do it again.
My task is to describe the error, if there's anything to describe. To report it and wait to see if anyone cares. I understand that games nobody plays probably won't get fixed quickly. But the fact that Proton also has fundamental flaws – that it doesn't manage resources and crashes – is a pretty major defect. And if the argument is that it works for some things, then we probably won't make any progress.

Why add such a convoluted system just to figure out if a game work when ProtonDB/AreWeAntiCheatYet works just fine?

Also, the client makes absolutely no distinction, to my knowledge, between the game being closed normally and it crashing. So, youll be entirely dependent on user reports anyway...

At this point might as well stick to protondb...
There's a good reason why Steam is dominant in PC gaming and the 1st choice of most PC gamers, and the lack of intrusive data harvesting is part of it.

you are under the same misunderstanding that many are

steam/valve

and pretty much every program that you run

still gets to collect the usage data for internal reviews to

"better their service"

every time we start the service it does this check

they need people's permission to share it on the stats page
Here, everyone's an expert on everything. I'll let you in on a secret: Wicrosoft and Google collect information about you to show you ads. My Linux doesn't show any ads, and if I compare the outgoing traffic, there's a pretty substantial difference between Windows and Linux. I don't need special offers in the form of ads; I need my OS to work the way I want it to. And when it comes to system crashes, that's something I really don't need.
PROTON_LOG=1 and report on proton's github. Done. /thread

you are wrong on all accounts

they collect all of the data that you for some reason think they don't

they know what you are using

they know how it is used and with what setting

they know if it connects

you really need to read your eula's
