2FA solution such as TOTP Microsoft Authenticator or Google Authenticator
These solutions are open source, and integrated into security accounts for Microsoft / Google. Furthermore, Steam Guard can be lost if a phone is un-recoverable.

If you worry about losing access over Steam guard. Don't. I lost my phone twice in the last 7 or so years. Support is very helpful for those cases. Just make sure to keep some proofs of ownership on tab just in case. Something you should be doing anyway if you take your accounts seriously.

That said, I wouldn't mind additional options for authentication, all I am saying is that the situation ain't that bad if your "papers" are in order.

What a condescending reply. I'm sorry you can't fathom someone having a damaged device or somehow losing their phone. And by the way I still have every phone I've ever purchased so you're somehow more clumsy than me, and I happen to leave my house every day and experience real world scenarios. For my situation my storages were reset on my Android phone apps many years ago on applications I didn't use for five years. Also if Valve has to accommodate situations like this because their proprietary software is vulnerable to damaged or lost phones, then how is that possibly more secure than standardized synced TOTP solutions with Google or Microsoft?
Valve likes to keep everything security related in-house, if 3rd parties are involved Valve cannot do anything if those services go down or get hacked.

The 3rd party in TOTP is time. I don't think time can go down.

I've been having a heated argument with people, because I and some other people want proper physical token 2FA, and they argue that this OPTIONAL feature is unacceptable, because someone MIGHT lose their key (which has backups) which they were never forced to use in the first place. I can only imagine the arguments against TOTP.

If you've been having heated arguments about totp then how can you only imagine those arguments...?

It's a good thing Valve uses standard TOTP with a custom alphabet, then.

I meant third party TOTP solutions. Physical tokes are not TOTP; they do not feature one-time passwords (they can, for eg. yubico has this feature, which I think is stupid and only made for compatibility) by default.

I'd rather trust something with an NSA/GCHQ/etc accreditation than software written by in-house devs from a video game storefront both in terms of availability and security.

Been working fine for me so far, then again it is as useful as the person using it.
