Either buy the games as gifts to your main account, or, if they are adult titles or personalized bundles, gift yourself a digital wallet card to the main account to purchase the adult game with wallet balance.
Disadvantage: You will not get Steam points for games you were gifted, they would be on the second account.
Of course, I still agree with your suggestion, but this is a workaround until Valve fixes these issues. The use of multiple accounts is not forbidden in the Steam Subscriber Agreement as long as they are created by you.
I know sometimes you have to do things in a hurry. But Valve loves a tiny bit too much 'one-size-fits-all' solutions.
If ID is going to be its own thing it needs to be its own thing, not use the payment method as workaround.
Tesco has 3 of my cards registered, so what's Valve's excuse?
Verify with mobile banking app? I don't see how that would be an issue every time I have to pay for something it doesn't matter which card, credit or debt, I have to open some app and approve the transaction.
Not all payment methods have this.
I can see that to a point. Passing around a credit card seems like a VERY bad idea though lol. At that rate though someone could apply for multiple credit cards and hand out different ones to underaged people if they wanted. The system can be abused either way IMO might as well not make it harder on the legit adults in order to make it ever so slightly harder for underage people from accessing certain games. I guess UK is just going to do UK things though....
I wouldn't be shocked if at some point you need to verify it is you even AFTER you buy the game each time you try to play it.
even "IF" the digital id goes ahead, valve would still demand cc for age verification because it doesn't involve implementing any new systems to steam.
when buying games on steam i very rarely get asked to approve transactions via the banking app.
Depending on how the law is worded they might not have a choice. Honestly they might block UK users (like some websites already started to do) until the come up with a system complaint with UK law.
For the record I don't support Digital ID's, and I fully think the UK Gov is trying to just 1984 it's population. In which case I don't think it will be an option to avoid using your D-ID as that kind of defeats the purpose.
Ahving to leave the card there 'parked' kind of serves as a 'deterrent' for people thinking to do something stupid.
Of course it creates another set of issues, like 'blocking' the payment method to the card used for verification (Which may not be the one the user wants to use for purchases) But Valve loves the easy, one-size-fits-all solutions to problems.
