Current topic regarding it.
Valve chose the safest method and their decision was definitely the better choice considering this happened...
https://insider-gaming.com/discord-hackers-claim-to-have-1-5tb-of-age-verification-photos/
'Safest method' lmao. Couldnt care less if some discord morons get my photo and the last 4 digits of my card. I would like to not be censored on a site and market place I've used for 12 + years and bought 365 games on. My banking is all behind biometrics and multiple different passcodes/customer numbers. Not fussed about leaks, just want the p***s taking to stop.
The more the better, Valve are ignoring everyone. Plus I'm not on about the specifics of card vendor / credit vs debit. Point was bank cards are not ID or legal proof of age. Let me use my legal ID documents for their literal purpose.
Don't need to prove your ID, just your age, so the argument that a credit card is not id is pointless.
Also the UK provided several means of validating age, the credit card is one as in the UK AFAIK you cannot get one in your name unless you are 18 or older. Unlike the US where you can get one younger if someone cosigns.
No it's not. But your assumptions might be, let me explain. Germany has similar laws, and credit cards aren't an age verification option. So Valve has provided them zero options.
The only reason UK users have credit cards as an option is Valve already accepts credit cards and it's valid under the law. If the law changes and removes credit cards. Well, you'll have to talk to German users to see how they cope.
Remember they don't have to implement age verification to follow the law, restricting all UK users is an easy and valid solution.
Valve didn't write the law, your government did and they disagree. Take it up with them.
No, but your assumptions and biases and ignorance are very clearly on display.
Also after using credit cards for 25 years I can tell you a few things. Having a credit card doesn't mean you're forced to use it. And no one is stopping you from paying the bill off every month and not paying any interest.
Clearly you don't want a credit card, and have some biases against them which lead to laughable "omgwtf" statements. But Valve doesn't want to collect personal data or get mixed up in a hundred different age verification schemes as more countries pass these laws.
Frankly you don't know how lucky are to have any options all things considered.
And before you huff and puff about lost revenue or whatnot. Well German users have been age restricted for years now. So Valve has some idea what the revenue impacts are. So unless you've got better data, I wouldn't waste the fuss.
In the early 2k, they said never put any info out on the net, 25 years later, they say share everything. Its inevitable, but ultimately getting spied on later with all manner of devices is something that we shouldnt grow comfortable with.
ofcom explicitly states that credit cards are valid forms of age verification ID

We can all blame someone else, but at the end of the day Valve made their choice, and now basically UK customers has less rights to buy certain games then everyone else. Just like a country like Germany.
And they certainly didn't take long to make such a decision either.
Of course it didn't take long. Valve had 2 choices, block all UK customers from using the store, or comply with the UK's requirements to allow them to use the store.
It wasn't up to Valve, they had no choice but to comply to do business in the UK, so its always funny when people try to blame the companies following the rules instead of the people making the stupid rules
Accept GOG fought against collective shout, and are still operating in the uk.

While Valve and Itch.io just bend over and didn't care. And if the same happens to the US, which I really don't want because it needs to stop, will you have the same opinion of Valve as you do now?
Also the games in question, had HIGHLY illegal content in them such as rape and CP, so uh why care about those games being lost?
GoG is barely a blip on the radar, they make almost no money and have minimal sales. Steam on the other hand is the biggest player in the market. GoG will eventually be in the same boat, they are just low priority.
Also if the US does follow thru i'll be disapointed in our representatives, but i'll just provide the proof required. Its not valve's fault, its the lawmakers making the rules. I don't expect any business to go against a law that was passed even if the law is stupid.
Get yourself some low limit credit card, even a prepaid one, and use that instead for verification service. It's a far safer option.
