Let Us Remove Unobtainable Achievements
Hey everyone,

If you’ve ever tried Steam hunting and saw that dreaded red mark in an app like Steam Hunters, you know how crushing it feels. No matter how many hours you’ve put into a game, that achievement is impossible to get—and unless you use third-party tools like SAM, that sweet blue ribbon will forever be out of reach.

I think Steam should allow players to contact support for unobtainable achievements. After review, Steam could remove the achievement from your stats, letting your completion rate actually reflect the games you can fully enjoy.

This would make achievement hunting less frustrating and keep our stats meaningful, without breaking anything for players who want to keep everything as-is.

Who else would love this?

if a game has an unobtainable achievement, that is up to that games developer to fix. otherwise, you simply missed the window for the achievement - Play during the 1894 winterfestival to earn this achievement...

Bro, I was 3 year old when arkham origins lost the multiplayer what would I have been able to do.

Steam support only handles steam account issues, and purchasing and refunding of Games. They have nothing to do with the Steam Forums, games issues, problems using the steam client, app, or the website.

Achievements are handled at the game level by the publisher / developer team.

It's a game dev issue, which means your only option is SAM, or convincing the devs.

So the premise of the thread is manipulating data to appear to be a 100% completionist when in fact the opposite would be true by removing achievements.

It reminds me of another poster who played Doom (2016) in 2021, 5 years after release then complained about unobtainable achievements and wanted them removed so they could being seen as completing Doom (2016) to 100% so they could showcase it.

Agreed, I will never understand the gatekeeping regarding online/limited time achievements that are no longer obtainable in achievement hunting communities.

That’s not even mentioning games that LAUCH with broken achievements and never fix them-or worse games that launch with perfectly obtainable achievements THEN add more post-release that are 100% broken and never fixed.

It could work like a toggle system for the once obtainable achievements: that way the people who were actually there and got the currently unearnable achievements could still display them, but those who weren’t wouldn’t display them nor have to have them forever messing up their completion %.

And games with legitimately unearnable achievements that devs never bother to fix should straight up be reportable to Valve. Then give the devs 6 months-1 year to fix said broken achievement(s). If the devs don’t fix them within that timeframe-they get auto-removed for everyone by Valve.

It is worth noting that devs are not required to ensure their games' achievements are reasonable, fair, or even attainable. They are just one of many creative tools the devs can use to craft whatever experience they want. There are games with achievements that are intentionally designed to be impossible to achieve (without cheating, of course) just for fun, or to make a point.

It is never a given that we'll be able to get all the achievements for any given game.

Love this idea, it is creative and makes sense, why should we have to see that annoying 90% completion rate because of an unobtainable achivement in tf2 if I dont even play it...

And what defines an achievement as 'unobtainable'?
Because if devs have to set them up... You'll have better luck squeezing milk off a stone.

An achievement hunter would play the game from day one, not five years later, nor expect achievements to removed because they stopped playing, as that is manipulating the data and nullifying the claim that you are an achievement hunter.

Considering how many posts on this board end up being some variant of "No, REAL achievement hunters would NEVER accept help or contest any aspect of this totally arbitrary system without any meaningful standards applied by anyone other than Sony or MS when they invented it, and REAL achievement hunters would reject THOSE too. No I'm not an achievement hunter I think all those people are crazy lol," it's clear there's a lot of people on this board who invent some vision of a gamer they dislike in their head to justify sadism against them
