Epic Games is laying off more than 800 people: 'We've been spending way more money than we earn'
Epic is bleeding money.

Five years after it took on Steam, Epic Games Store is yet to make a penny of profit
“For a while now, we've been spending way more money than we earn,” said CEO Tim Sweeney at the time. (Sweeney, for his part, remains staunchly un-laid-off.) It seems like that is certainly true for the Epic Games Store too, and may remain that way for a while - even as Epic hopes to eventually see it turn a profit.
After all they should have expected a Fallout when not balancing their books.
Sheesh.
There are lots of free-to-play and freely-offered games on the service.
Nah, i prefer steam remain profitable as well as not getting hit by record breaking fines and repeatedly failing. Epic is pretty much the textbook example of what NOT to do, hence why they've lost over a BILLION dollars so far
Panhandlers and beggars dont make Valve any margin.
Imagine the backlash Steam would get if they suddenly mirrored Epic.
Epic is trying to establish market share. Steam doesn't have that problem.
Those games are free for the user, not for Epic.
Epic also shells out millions to gain exclusivity deals, some temporary, some permanent, because Epic cannot naturally draw customers, they have to force them to come via being the only store with the game.
Steam does not have to force anything as the games on Steam are there because the developers of the game want them there, not because they got payed for it.
The EGS will be unable to make any money at this rate.
The only thing preventing them from going under is sales of Unreal Engine and micro transactions from Fortnite, but that cannot sustain them forever.
OP lowkey begging for free games.
