Mediatek RZ608 Wi-Fi 6E 80Mhz PCI/e Adapter and system lockups durring updates and installs
I had an issue that has risen with downloading updates or installing games in steam. while updating a game or installing a game my PC locks up to where no clicks are responded to, nothing is responding, even activity in task manager stops, I can't even get ctrl alt del to respond. I just wanted to be as clear as possible by what I mean by "locked up". Another thing that's happening is while my pc is locked up, my WiFi adapter is getting disabled, then re-enabled once the system starts responding again.

After extensive troubleshooting I discovered with the help of Grok's latests AI model that the following information was present on the internet;

"Top Suspect Now: Mediatek/RZ608 Wi-Fi 6E Driver + Windows Update Interaction
The RZ608 is a Mediatek MT7921K-based card (Wi-Fi 6E + Bluetooth combo).

Mediatek’s Windows drivers for this chip have been notoriously unstable since late 2024/early 2025 Windows updates (especially KB5039212, KB5040442, and the November/December 2025 cumulative updates). Hundreds of people with Mediatek Wi-Fi 6/6E cards (MT7921, MT7922, RZ608, RZ616, etc.) started reporting exactly your symptoms in the last 6–8 months:

Full system hang/lockup under sustained network load (Steam downloads, Windows Update, large file transfers)
Wi-Fi adapter briefly disappears and re-appears in Device Manager during the freeze
The freeze completely stops if HWInfo64 or any hardware-monitoring tool is running (this is a known side-effect of how the bad driver interacts with the PCI-e bus when it’s being polled)
Rolling the system back a year fixes it; letting updates catch up brings it back

This matches your description 100 %."

So I followed it's recommendation of downloading and replacing the driver with the Mediatek RZ608 driver with the last known-good version "Mediatek Wi-Fi 6 MT7921 driver package 3.3.3.760" and it resolved/fixed my problem/issue.

Usually updating your driver to the latest version fixes your problems, but in this case reverting to an older driver does the trick.

I'm posting this in hopes that it helps someone else out there that is having the same problem.

NOTE: the only download links I could find for the older drivers where;

For Windows 11: https://drivers.softpedia.com/get/NETWORK-CARD/MediaTek/MediaTek-Wi-Fi-6-MT7921-Wireless-LAN-Card-Driver-3-3-3-760-for-Windows-11.shtml

For Windows 10: https://drivers.softpedia.com/get/NETWORK-CARD/MediaTek/MediaTek-MT7921-WLAN-Driver-3-3-3-760-for-Windows-10-S-64-bit.shtml

I hope they are still available when/if you need them...

can you email Mediatek about your issues since they made the the drivers for it? Also, if you installed the driver update from windows updates, go to the manufacturer's website and see if they have a newer driver that may fix it.
