This is driving me bananas.
This happens with every game. Steams multiplies my in-game time by up to 100X.

For example, I have spent at tops 1.5 hours going through the tutorials for my latest game.

Steam claims I have already 23.1 hours played.

My steam account is on my desktop. It's the only machine I use for playing games. When I'm done with a game session, I shut the game down via the Steam client.

So where does Steam come up with these wild numbers?

I have purchased some games simply because they were on sale and never played them.

Some have me logged into them for over one hundred hours.

WTF is going on?

This kills my ability to get a refund under the rules.

Steam only tracks time while the exe of the game is running. That can be simulated through other programs. So if your times are going up, you're somehow making Steam think that your games are running. Either through other software, letting the games idle or worst, having someone else use your account.

No one else uses this machine. I live alone as a hermit and misanthrope who, when not gaming, writes his manifesto which should be published by summer 2026.

Can you suggest how I can begin looking into the other possible causes of this problem?

I don't know where to begin.
Are you family sharing?

no.

Then you have someone illegally using your account. Scan for malware and check logins to your steam account.
