How do I upgrade to 64 bit?
By the end of the year, Steam will stop supporting the 32 but client, which I've been using since my brother set me up with it many years ago. I'm assuming I just downloaded it and log in, but what will happen to all the game files? Will they get duplicated? Will I have to delete them manually? What about my family sharing? Will that have to be re-established? What about non-workshop mods? I need to know all this ahead of time before I end up spending an unexpected 3 hours fixing everything. Thank you.

I believe Steam will no longer support 32-bit Operating Systems starting 2026. Hold the Windows key down and press the Pause/Break key. Does it show 64 or 32-bit OS?

Unless your PC is like over 15 years old, chances are pretty slim that your hardware is 32bit, or your OS is 32bit.

The Steam software has been 32bit because there hasn't been a lot of pressure for it to be 64bit. You shouldn't really have to do anything, one day you'll get an update and you probably won't notice a thing.

Games and mods on Steam won't change. They're separate applications and files, they're not a part of Steam and changes to Steam generally won't effect them.

Whatever you're thinking is overthinking.

Are you sure? I don't have to do it manually?

I'm sure once you're running the updated version and you're reflecting on this thread you'll chuckle to yourself about the wasted worry/energy.

Maybe. I just don't know for sure. Is there an official FAQ that answers all this?

You got a decent first REPLY, read it.

First you need to find out exactly what you have. What is the bit level of the OS you have installed?

If it is 32-bit, there is no easy conversion from one to the other. It would require a re-installation of the OS.

From the first reply, hold down the Windows key and hit the PAUSE key. That should bring up your About window. Look for a field called "System type". Next to it should say if it is 32-bit or 64-bit.

It may say Pause Break. Usually above the Page Up and Page Down keys.

I don't have any need for a faq or guide, being a software developer I already have significant experience and know absolutely it's a non-issue.

If you need one that's what search engines are for.

If you have a hard time finding any resources on the subject that might be a hint about the level of concern everyone else has.

This is not a complicated labor intensive thing. One day the steam.exe will be compiled as 32bit, the next day it'll be compiled 64bit. Valve could complicate it and make it a hassle for 100 million users if they wanted to. Why would they want to?

It is in fact 64. What should my next move be?

Your next move is not worrying, nothing happens. Just keep it as is.

It'll just automatically update?

Stop worrying. You're all set.

Games that offer 32bit versions may just download the 64bit depots but since you have 64bit already, that means the games already are downloaded as 64bit ones.

If you are unsure, just check the game files for errors (verifying) and it will download the proper files from the depots if needed.

But i doubt that is needed.

The client knows if you have a 64bit OS running or 32bit and downloads the proper game file depots automatically.
