Steam Download Speed capped at 4MB/s
EDIT: Once her download finished my download speed increased to 28 MB/s and I thought my troubles were over, that lasted about 20 minutes and we’re back to 3 MB/s.

Myself and my significant other each have a PC and were currently downloading Sea of Thieves, her PC sits around 25-30 MB/s while mine is anything from 500kB/s-5MB/s, our steam download settings are identical, I am not playing or running any program in the background while the game downloads. This is far from the first time this computer has done this and I am fed up.

I have also updated my wifi drivers and cleared my steam download cache, is there anything else I need to be looking at? PCs in the same room, on the same network, with the same settings but I am lacking. I'll add that both of us are using external wifi antennas since we are on apartment wifi, we have no ethernet and I have already tried swapping antennas with no change on either system.

Thanks for the help.

Don't use 2.4 GHz wifi (those can be capped around 5 MByte/s and go down in speed if there's a lot on this channel), use 5 GHz instead.

I’ve swapped it over to prefer 5GHz, so far the change seems to be negative, I’m down to 40kB/s but I’ll update this thread after I restart the computer and give it some time to run.

I’ve preferred it to 2.4GHz as a base (400kB/s) and I’ve tried 5GHz (3-6GB/s) with no change in results. Any other ideas?
Can you use an ethernet cable directly to your router temporarily to see whether wifi is the issue?

I believe I mentioned it somewhere in the post, we have a “community WiFi” at our apartment complex which means no Ethernet, they do offer Ethernet installation with an individual router at renters expense but I have no say in who I get as a provider, most likely whoever does the crappy internet now.

The other PC in the same room running off the same WiFi is not having this issue if that helps.
