Can older SteamVR games run on newer VR hardware?
So I have 2 VR games that I've been really excited to play, especially since I'm very late to actually getting to play them since release. However I'm hesitant to buy them simply because, outside of Steam, they're both listed as the Rift/Rift-S being the latest headsets they can be played on. Does anyone know if titles listed like this still work on newer hardware through SteamVR? (This might be a really dumb question, but this is also my first foray into VR)

I don't see why it wouldn't as long using it via SteamVR as it uses OpenXR which helps with layer compatibility between all AR/VR headsets for PCVR, just like how Steam Controller works for wide range of controllers.

Just note if the game you buy is from Meta store, or etc store that not via Steam, you have to see if can download on your PC, if it for headset only, and not meant to be played via PCVR then basically SOL, games that are PCVR supported can add as NON-Steam game, and should work via SteamVR.

Can also try asking here for those that using VR.

Well in a perfect world, they should be backwards compatible, but this is not a perfect world. I suggest asking on the forums of the specific vr games you want to buy.

Both of them are listed (at least on Steam) as needing SteamVR, since Meta won't even let me purchase either game because I never registered a Rift with my account (Planning on getting the new Steam headset when it releases so I hopefully don't have to mess with "Meta-jank"

Like I said, if the game being handle via SteamVR it be using OpenXR this is far more friendly than those wall garden stores like Meta, Apple app, and so on.

Reason why game devs list said things is because either that what they were using to test it with, or because they made it using said API, which again OpenXR allow cross brands to work, may be using rift, quest, vive, or etc...
