Payment processing of credit cards often requires a contact number as part of the verification process. I'm sure whatever credit card you are using must have a phone number of some kind associated with it. While Steam might be calling it a cellphone, maybe your home phone will work just as well.

i tried an old phone number (land line) but no luck. I dont recall ever using a cellphone number before when using the card. i've made a fair bit of purchases over the years using the same card. to say its for "security reasons" is bogus since if i was using a stolen card it would of been flagged already or when i used it the first time. but i used that same card for years. guess ill have to get a gift card and just add funds to wallet the old fashioned way. pretty lame.

I feel like there's something more to it. It should only need to be a valid number. I have two numbers, one on my credit card accounts and a backup number. And I've used the backup number a lot with no issue.

There's really no way to determine if a phone number is a cell or land line by the number itself. In the US anyway, phone numbers can be ported out to different services so you can take it with you from service to service.

I wish I could provide a similar perspective but I've had a cellphone for a couple of decades now and I can't remember a time when I wasn't asked for phone number when paying for something online with a credit card.

It's been a thing for awhile now and used to combat fraud / bots and you can always try another payment option as this last I checked was just a thing for when you use credit cards.

There are also a lot of services out there for digital phone numbers that could work if you try it but a lot of online sites require phone numbers to help combat botting and it will only get more common.

thanks for the input. i get that they would like a number but if the card number has already been used several times in the past then it should be counted as valid . my name on my steam account is the same as on my card. i dont want a cellphone because of the way governments and corporations overstep their bounds. its a breech of privacy. sadly no one seems to care about their privacy these days. ill try my luck with a steam card from dollar tree i guess. thanks again

thanks for the input. i just dont have a need for a cellphone and thought a card that i've already used for several years would of been fine. but apparently the world wants to be like china and make cell phones mandatory to do anything. pretty sad. cheers.
