Steam purchase didn't calculate correct amount of tax
https://psteamcommunity.yuanyoumao.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3599947417

I tried to purchase carats at Uma Musume and it didn't do the tax correctly. Gave me 20 cents less than I needed for the transaction. I couldn't make it go through, and it said I canceled the transaction.

I tried again, and this is what I see. The purchase did go through, and I have 22 dollars and 60-odd cents on my Steam account. But I need 20 more cents to purchase the carats!

I didn't do that. Steam was supposed to handle it all automatically. I just got ♥♥♥♥♥♥ over, because the minimum purchase on Steam is 5 dollars.

I can't just go add 20 cents to my account to fix this ♥♥♥♥-up. I have to give Valve another 5 dollars to reward them for their incompetence???

How much were you expecting the tax to be?

Assuming your location on your profile is accurate, New York State Sales Tax is 8.875%. On a purchase of $20.99, that should be about $1.836625.. From your screenshot the tax as $1.86, not that far off. Probably some rounding error. But you'd still fall short no matter if it was rounded or not.

Just sell something fro your inventory like cromos, or just use your card instead of adding founds. Also you can add the exact amount for the purchase if you dont have any money on your steam wallet.

IDK how much the tax should be. I don't control that. I can't enter a custom amount here. Steam is supposed to handle it all automatically.

It shows right there in the screenshot. The item I tried to buy costs $22.85 but Steam handled the paypal transaction that put 22.67 in my account. So I'm short like 18 cents.

The minimum transaction is $5 so if I want to add 18 cents to my account, I have to give Valve another 5 dollars?

WTF is this?

They need to fix whatever this was so it charges the correct amount!

Could it be Steam wrestling with the payment processor? Maybe paypal added a fee because they wanted a cut?

Then how do you know it's wrong?

So not a tax problem, then.

I'm not sure how you added funds via Paypal, but I just bought a game with my Paypal and it just transacted as if I was paying by credit card with exact change, subtotal + tax.
So, sales tax of 8.86%?

:nkCool:

could refund the funds and then manually add the proper amount you need

I mean kinda seems like OP is blaming Steam for their incompetence, no?

And I'll never get tired of people whining and crying over pennies or acting like $5 is some burden. None of those things is actually Valve's problem you know.

It's all handled automatically. I can't even enter a custom amount. I click the buy button and it's supposed to buy my thing.

That didn't happen, and ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ about it is perfectly justified. This is something Valve should want to work correctly every time.

If I'm being overcharged $5 for every transaction I would flip my ♥♥♥♥.

Acting like you're Mr. Moneybags and don't care how much you pay? What ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.

You're probably not even old enough to work a job.

Rich people are usually even stingier than the rest of us. How do you think they became rich?

You're not wrong Kamiyama. When purchasing micro transaction on steam, you purchase any bundle on any given game you get directed to steam to complete the transaction. At that time you're asked to select a payment method. Let's say you choose your credit/debit card, at the initial price screen it shows the correct amount of the purchase and sales tax and all is good. But then you get to the second screen where you finalize and it miscalculates your required sales tax, usually off by a penny or two. A penny or two is not the issue so much but that the issue is your initial payment is not enough and in order to complete the transaction you must, with no option to select any type of custom currency, but to select the the required minimum of $5.00. I have screenshots of every step and have turned in a ticket to support but they have dismissed it even with proof. This issue has only just started happening lately.

Yeah they didn't seem to care when I put a ticket in. I ended up having my original purchase refunded and then I just funded my Steam account with $20 or $25 or whatever and then bought the thing I wanted in Uma Musume, and it left a few dollars left over in my Steam account.

It's dumb and I resent having to do that. I wish it would have calculated the transaction correctly to begin with.

I'm wondering if the tax changed or the tariffs have something to do with it? Or maybe the devs changed the price in the game, but forgot to update the Steam version? That could also cause a mismatch.

I'm not sure who is at fault. It could be Steam, or the USA government, or the devs.

It's most likely not so convoluted.
Kamiyama (已封禁) 11 月 12 日 下午 7:06
It could be paypal at fault too.

Since Steam support isn't being helpful it's anyone's guess who is at fault for the price mismatch.
Keadho 11 月 12 日 下午 8:28
I don't use Paypal. My screenshots show exactly what was intended and calculated based off my location and currency by Steam. It's the next page that miscalculates it and forces you to add $5.00.. It's not a bug it's feature. It won't be until many say something about it will it be fixed i'm sure. Had this account for over 8 years and $1000s of dollars in games and transaction. I just took my card off and don't intended to ever buy anything on here again. It's sounds extreme i know but most of the games on here are ripped anyway and are for free on so many different platforms, even first day releases, so it doesn't even matter. I just want people to be aware to review all transactions and if you get a little screwed over theres not much recourse. They just said try it again and see if it happens essentially. Yeah, no. I will not.
