Regarding joining a steam family before an entire year goes by, not even Valve will help you there.
Once you join the family, the 1-year clock starts. It's not when you leave. So if you joined the family 6 months ago, you only have 6 more months to go before being able to join another. On the flipside, your slot in their family is also reserved for you for that time period as well. They can't use your slot for anyone else until the year expires. If that's any consolation.
Life is fun
The simple fact you used it to set up a bunch of friends is a large part of how you ended up in this problem.
Sometimes friends are just as much family as family is. I wouldn't hesitate to add my best friend to a family group if they were into video games as much as I am.
Some of us are indeed closer to our friends than we are to our family and certain circles got a term "chosen family" because the poeple they chose to be around are indeed closer than the real family.
