Try to reply to this post by clicking on the smiley face that appears to the left of the green publish button.
For it to appear, you need to type something first.
If it's still not showing up, it's probably a bug.
You can try restarting Steam completely, and if it persists, open a ticket with Valve support.

when i click the smiley face, it appears only a grey square.
I don't know why, but i have this since months.
And i tried a lot, also a restart of course, but thx.
Now i'll try a re-install. Maybe...

Steam... it's always so fun to chat with bots, right?

I had two persons with different names in the chat from the support ticket. So, i think not bots.
But who knows today. If bot or not nevertheless they where nice,lol.

So, I've finally found a fix for this problem. It was quite simple, but at the same time so bizarre.

It was simply due to the activated Family View. As soon as Family View is activated, meaning the icon at the top of the client is green, emoticons don't work in the community boards.

It's a truly bizarre problem that takes a long time to figure out. Sometimes you can't see the forest for the trees.

It should probably be solved with an update, since all the family members like to use emoticons. Or give a hint when family view is activated when using the boards, that emoticons dont't work.
I mean, I somehow understand this as an overlap of security policies. Actually, someone in Family View shouldn't be able to post on the boards in the name of the account owner. It's either all or nothing.

yah thanks but right now i have seen that i can not use emoticons again, like before. Only when i answer to a posting like yours, the smiley menu appears.
When i just write a posting and click the smiley, appears only agrey square again.
But here i can use it. Weird

Thx xarvn, i tried it right now but no. it's a grey square now, equal if i post or answer with quote, only a grey aquare appears when i click the smiley next to "Post Comment".
Same on my Win11PC or Steam Deck.
