Concern About Steam’s Direction and Outside Influence
https://x.com/AftermathZGame/status/1983285119600255476
I absolutely love the Steam Deck. It’s my favorite gaming device since the Xbox 360, and I play it more than my 4070 Ti Super and 7800X3D PC.

But this post caught my attention: https://x.com/AftermathZGame/status/1983285119600255476

I don’t see how that image is offensive. It feels like gaming is being influenced by people more focused on social agendas than creativity.

Why does Steam need to bend to that?

Male characters in games are often unrealistic too! Massive, tall, and built like tanks, and nobody complains about that. I don’t think most female gamers even care, and if anyone doesn’t like something, they can simply choose not to buy it.

This kind of censorship is divisive and anti-consumer. It pushes away the very people who built this hobby while catering to those who don’t even play games.

I’m not a fan of over-sexualized designs either. Quiet in Metal Gear Solid 5 was too much for me. But I’m against a small, well-funded group deciding what we can or can’t see. Most of them don’t care about gaming, yet they get to shape what everyone else experiences.

Why is there so much money behind people trying to police gamers instead of support them?

Don't put this here. It has zero do with the Steam Deck. Put in the General Steam Discussion area:

Yes it does. It's the company as a whole.

You should direct your concern to Valve directly. This is a public fourm specifically for the Steam Deck. I'm not sure what you hope to gain by posting this here.

To inform people.

There will always be more lurkers than people who post. I learned of this story way after others. So many should be aware of what Valve is doing before considering a steam deck. Do they really want to help a company that has games censored for nonsense?

Steam is business, just like Walmart, Target and the others. As a business, "they" get to decide what is sold in their store and how. People want their products in those stores because those stores have more potential customers. To sell in those stores, you have to follow their guidelines.

The devs of that game can sell their game on their own website if they want, or sell it on GoG or Epic. Steam is not the only digital gaming store on the internet.

The rule has been in place since (at least) 2022 that the store 'capsule' art must be "PG-13 appropriate".

It's not some new thing driven by some outside group or whatever, and has no bearing on the actual content of the game. To be clear: the game itself isn't censored. They could submit the same image without the woman in the foreground and get approved.

It's basically the same principle as e.g. if you're selling DVDs of Game of Thrones, you don't put boobs or beheadings on the cover despite there being boobs and beheadings in the product. They're not censoring Game of Thrones, it's just that the marketing materials are going to be seen by a wider audience than the product itself, so they should be appropriate for a wider audience.

If I was being cynical, I'd say that the developers of this game reckon that they can get more publicity for their game by drumming up a 'controversy' about censorship than they can by just editing their artwork and putting their game on Steam. And they're probably right!
