Question regarding Steam support
Hi all.

So a friend of mind contacted me and said they accidentally reported my account and that I need to submit an appeal to stop my account from getting suspended. Then they told me I need to contact them on a discord channel with this ID: steam_appeal_support

Is this a real thing? I think this sounds really suspicious to redirect me to a discord channel.

Thanks.

scam

Very old Scam, Steam will never operate outside the steam client support ticket system, and will never use chat, facebook, discord or any other social media site.

Report the person who sent you that message, and state his account has been comprimised

Scam: I Have Been Reported and Will Be Banned

Ok, thanks. I have now reported them.

EDIT:

Also I didn't follow any instructions, I just told them "yeah, that sounds sus, I'll have to verify" and then I asked here. I assume I should be safe, right? I have to actually do what they say to be victim of the scam?

Sorry if that's an obvious question, I just tend to be a bit paranoid.

You are safe. The point of the discord thing is to be able to contact you from a position of authority (steam support) and convince you to engage in whatever the next step of that specific scam would be.

It would probably be something like: "hey, you'll get SUPER BANNED, but lucky you, you can safe your inventory by sending it to me, super official steam person. I'll totally give it back".

Ok, thanks!

First they were asking if more people than me was using my account, so I was concerned that they were going to tell me it was compromised. They didn't, but tried to scam me instead. So I'm a bit confused why they asked about if I was the only one using my account or not. And since I'm confused, I'm also concerned.

As long as you didnt click on any links they sent you or you sent them your personal account info you should be all good. But if your still worried you can do the following steps to make sure your account is still secure:

1. Scan for malware https://www.malwarebytes.com/
2. Check that the email and phone number on the Steam account are still yours.
3. Deauthorize all other devices https://psteamproxy.yuanyoumao.com/twofactor/manage
4. Change passwords from a trusted/clean device.
5. Generate new backup codes for your Mobile App https://psteamproxy.yuanyoumao.com/twofactor/manage
6. Revoke the API key https://psteamcommunity.yuanyoumao.com/dev/apikey (there should be nothing in the APIKEY)

Stop using third party launcher discord. There are many scammers on it. Steam already has scammers too. But the more sites you use, the more your going to get scammed OP. So limit your internet footprint on sites to limit how many scams you are exposed to.

Plus overlays can slow down your pc. That is why nobody likes ubisoft connect or ea app. Discord does the same thing.

I did not click on anything and told them no personal account details (apart from that I'm the only one using it I guess). Didn't even click the screenshots they sent as proof. Logged out from Steam on that device as well, using another right now. Also logged out from any other services just to be sure.

Guessing from the responses here it might have been overkill, since if they could hack me just by sending a message there would be no reason to send me to discord.

While I was unaware of this scam, I treat anything that guides you off platform for support as highly suspicious. Guess that's the principle that saved me.

That is very good. Any link that sends you off steam is bad. Treat all of them as scams. that way you will keep your account safe. In fact, better not even clicking on links like that.

I don't have Discord on that PC, and they contacted me via Steam and tried to get me to go to Discord (which I obviously couldn't do anyway without installing it first). I generally don't have many accounts on sites and I'm careful with what services I use in general. This might actually be my first encounter with a scammer on Steam, and I've been on here a long time.

Good job. By not having discord on your pc, you actually saved yourself from scammers. This is one reason why i do not use it, and plus since it is a third party launcher, it's overlays can slow down your pc.

Discord is a huge red flag. They use it because they know Discord doesn't care.
