I got a question about the Monopoly lawsuit Steam is going through.
What will happen if Steam/Valve loses? I have seen some videos on youtube and that has me worried what will happen to this platform in the future. Steam is the best place i have found for PC and the though of what could happen doesn't sit well with me.

Remember, "videos on youtube" make money on clicks. Sensationalism and panic gets more clicks, so they're incentivized to turn everything into a Big Scary Controversy/etc. Whether it is or not.

I'm not aware of Valve creating or distributing an unlicensed version of Monopoly. Ubisoft should still be licensed for the video game version of the game.

Do you mean the antitrust suit launched by Wolfire Games because they didn't understand Valve's rules for issuing Steam keys?

I mean at this point it's rather silly. Even at the time of that Lawsuit Valve had at least two other ciompetitors (GoG, and Origin), one of which was backed by one of the largest publishers in the industry.. You could even add blizzacti in there as well, and as i recall ms had their own storefront at the time as well. Plus the devs have always had the option to sell directly. Valve does nothing to prevent dev/pubs from selling on storefronts other than steam, imposes no restrictions on users for having and maintaining multiple accounts and even multiple store clients/launchers open simultaneously, nor do they apply any penalty to a dev pub that chooses not to sell on their store.

Vaklve has no Monopoly, they are just reaping the benefits of having a better product.
The only rule steam really has is that the dev/pub has to maintain pricing parity. I,.e they are not allowed to have a lower base price for the same game on another platform. Which, fun-fact is a stipulation EVERY STORE HAS withe their suppliers. DIgital or otherwise.

Not having that stipulation is mistake new store owners make once and quickly correct.

Yeah, people love to attribute being successful/dominant as being a monopoly. The reality is Valve isn't doing anything to stifle competition or even copy strategies other platforms are pushing, IE subscription services, free games every week. Nor are they pressuring any publishers for exclusives or anything.

I mean claiming Steam is a monopoly is like claiming McDonald's is a monopoly in fast food... it just doesn't hold up under any scrutiny.

Lots of sealed documents in the case.

Best not to speculate and simply let the courts deal with it. Not like our opinions will really push things one way or another.

If one is against it, best they can do is refuse to buy from those involved.
if valve lost then the cost would be catastrophic. gabe newell wouldn't be able to afford his yearly superyacht. please pray for him
