Old steam machine
Would be nice to get some sort of discount if we traded in our old steam machines towards buying the new one. Have 3 of them and liked it at first but they were pretty much abandoned for the most part by steam. Hope the new stuff has better longevity.

They were never sold on Steam by Valve. Every single one was sold by a 3rd party.

Valve's own models numbered 300 and we're given to press.

Just like sony gave discounts on PS5's if you traded in your PS3... oh wait. You know the point of trading stuff in is you get something, like a discount. But then the store gets to sell the used item.... only when the used item has depreciated to zero then it's just empty wishful thinking....

This is the most moronic thing I've ever read, and Ive been reading "i have old thing can I get a discount for new thing" threads for quite a while now.

It was just a suggestion, not because "old thing for new thing discount" But more because it was a hyped product that was pretty much left dead in the water. It wasn't like an xbox or ps that had a long term update and support window.

I mean why don't you just sell it yourself? Why do you need steam to do it for you?

I mean why would Steam want your old steam machines? Places that let you trade in an old system for a discount turn around and re-sell the system for more then you traded it in for and there isn't much of a market for 10+ year old PC Hardware.

That is how owning property used to work, before Software as a Service (SaaS), DLC, and online shopping eroded the presence of physical media and the 2nd hand market (GameStop).

You bought something that would have resale value, and then you sold it to buy the new thing that came along.

Expecting to sell it later, you would take better care of the item. Better care means better resale value.

Sorry I am dumb, I was thinking of the Steam Link which was originally being called steam machine. Didn't know they had some 3rd party project called steam machine also.
