The level of AI slop games is too damm high.
I'm loving the Next Fest and have a few games to look forward to, but my god, the number of crappy AI slop games is astonishing. Steam always had asset-flip games, but it's getting scary. We need better quality control, not just showing that the game has AI, we need to clean the store of these damn clankers, or else good games will end up drowned in this sea of ♥♥♥♥♥♥ games.

Can you show some examples?

It falls on the customers to make their decision as pure AI games are no where near enough of a game for most and partial AI stuff such as AI voices / music or with the use of AI tools is common enough for most to accept as you are told about them on the store page.

Not to mention they have been using similar tools for multiple decades in game development.

Steam gets paid for the games to be listed and with the rules they have in place over such games unless it becomes a major issue they will allow them.

I don't have a problem with using AI, and I believe that AI can be used well to make good content. However, the volume of low-effort scam games is simply too much, and I worry that potentially good games may be buried.

Sure. Now about those examples

I really think every game that uses A.I. for whatever reason should be forced to say it did on the store page.

That way everyone can decide for themselves if it is worth the price or not.

That is the rule on Steam, afaik. Thing is, though, that people like to call stuff they don't like "AI slop", "shovelware", etc. Which is why people ask for examples.

You mean curation? I personally prefer curation, but the problem then becomes what should be allowed in and what should be excluded. It seems Valve is no longer interested in that job.

I would rather have those AI-generated wall-of-text threads removed from Steam tbh.

Content creators are influential and are nervous about things that lower the barrier for new content creators.

They never were. Not sure why people think that either, some form of imagination of the Church of GabeN I presume.

I also like that. Steam has loads of games that are fun and good, which are not available on "curated" stores.

I don't personally follow any content curators anyway..

What exactly is "AI slop"? What exactly makes a game "AI slop"?

If a great game like Vampire Survivors had AI-generated graphics instead of hand-drawn pixels, would that suddenly turn it into "AI slop"?

Many games use procedural generation to automate the creation of content. Some even programmatically generate their own icons and other images. That kind of technique has been around for decades. How is that any different from using AI to generate that content instead? It's still software doing work for the developer, which any smart developer always takes advantage of.

The aversion to developers using AI is irrational. It's just the next iteration of what's already been done for a long time.
I love AI slop, it really is the future. Big games developed by AI, drawn by AI, marketed by AI, bought by braindead consumers who don't give a hoot about art, quality or soul. It is what gamers deserve.
