Friend Banned for no reason
My close friend created a group, and he got really excited to see people join it. In his post he made, he specifically said that he wasn't promoting it and just wanted to announce his idea to the world. Sadly, the people at Steam didn't actually read his post, and he's now banned from the community for "Attempting to recruit," although he specifically stated that wasn't the case. Foe anyone wondering, the account is called Inventory Recycler or something (I hope I spelled that right). Set my buddy free, Valve!

What exactly did he do?

Spammed multiple forums about the group he had created, while spamming, advertising and recruiting are all banned in Steam Discussion Rules and Guidelines.

since there are literally thousands of groups all over Steam.

It's banned exactly because there's thousands of groups and those groups kept spamming adverts and recruitment posts.

I mean, if I have a group, no reason he can't have one, right?

It's not against the rules to create or have a group. It is against the rules to spam, advertise and recruit in Steam forums.

It's all sorted now as OP's friend understood, admitted their mistake and apologized (rare as an unicorn these days). Brave of him to do so.

Thank you for trying to defend me. I really appreciate the support and it means a lot to me. However, I do admit I was in the wrong. I've already made an apology post, but I'll say it again. I'm sorry for spamming messages and I'll do my best to be better in the future.

Live and learn. All the best. :wftohappy:

I saw the title of that post in two different forums.
I figured it was someone who wanted unused items(a common things in the forums). Literally a begging thread just based on the title.
Whomever reported it must have thought similar(or worse). I didn't even open them.
Posting it multiple times is a no-no also.

Sorta sounds like they were advertising somthing in this "idea"... especially since enough people reported them that they got banned. So what are you leaving out?

I get that, but he definitely didn't know that. After all, he's very new to the whole "community" thing, y'know? I've known this guy for years, and it sucks to see him get shot down like that :(

Literally nothing, you can check for yourself if you want.

just wanted to announce his idea to the world

And that would be promoting it.

He literally said "You don't have to join, but I'd appreciate you checking it out," or something like that.

Which is the definition of promoting it

Which is still promoting/advertising and on top of that your friend spammed it all over the place.... Still has at least 5 posts mods did not delete yet.

Hm... I actually side with the ban. While your friend may have noble intentions the post seems more like an attempt at panhandling than anything else. As pointed out by a post above the poster sent it in multiple forums thus becoming spam. Thus the ban is justified. Good intentions don't make it right. Your friend spammed forums asking for free stuff, seems like they got a free ban.

Are people foreign to spreading the word or something? I'm so confused by this

His idea isn't based on "free stuff," it's based similarly to how those weird inventory bot accounts work, except people actually take things from it. Thus the recycling. Doesn't seem wrong to me?
Your friend should make a Support ticket(there's a link in the ban message notification itself) and ask what the reason was for the ban. Maybe it was something else entirely. Perhaps they goofed. Maybe they only wanted to apply a warning to their account but clicked the wrong button.

He's spreading the word, not necessarily promoting? Promoting implies he wanted something in return, but it seems like he just wanted to say "Hey, I got this cool idea running!" Y'know?

That's possible, I'll text him right now and let him know. Thank you!

seriously, get a dictionary.
