Why does Valve allow devs to community ban without investigation?
I was looking into an old game I once played and remembered after seeing the discussions here, that I was perma banned from it after posting on it about how the developer's discord had moderators who liked to troll and harass people.

Surely, Valve has a responsibility to ensure that developers cannot just go around banning people willy nilly. I even checked further looking online for other incidents of bad devs, and found another game where the dev would literally ban anyone who left a negative review, any negative feedback in the discussions, or anything. The game's discussions are suspiciously clean even though the product was basically shut down, its no longer buy-able.

I believe I heard somewhere that three community bans automatically bans you from all of steam community. Which means corrupt developers can easily injure a lot of people if they wanted to. Steam is also automated in how it handles things, no human actually checks on bans unless they are asked to do so.

Frankly, I feel like Valve should be given a ping every single time a ban is issued by a developer from any community, so that they can check and verify the reason. Seeing a dev ban people simply for negative feedback, should have the developer banned.

Its gonna happen a lot more, considering the quality of games on steam is much more poor, lots of really crappy content getting on here, clones, shovelware, even troll games. Eventually the developers are gonna figure out they can abuse the system further and punish people with complete community bans.

I will never understand why people thinks devs should be absolutely fine with people bad mouthing them (or their staff) in the space they have control over because it's part of what they pay for. Developpers are also Valve's customers. Valve is just the middleman that profits to both by offering a service which include their community page.

If you go right in swinging. Well, what do you expect?

Valve has mostly a hands off approach because they need to achieve a certain balance here. But, they DO intervene in extreme cases.

There's a difference between bad mouthing, and negative reviews or even negative feedback.

In the case of the one and only ban I have, I was giving game feedback on discord. Then was banned. Went to steam forums to warn people the dev was one of those who bans people for feedback that he doesn't like. Ban.

There have been several game devs who do this type of thing.

There is ♥♥♥♥ developers for sure. I ain't denying that. But, the sane thing to do imo is simply to not give them support. Actively trying to torpedo them will just get you in trouble if you get banned and Valve don't deem the situation excessive.

If you have a strong piece to share. Do so off platform. Don't give them the reason they need to ban you on a silver platter.

Well, off platform is unhelpful. Do you go off platform game diving before you buy a game? How many others do, or would? I think its important to have your complaints about a game be visible in the place that people actually buy the game.

Multiple hub bans will net you a community wide ban, but it has to be bans from different hubs, not multiple from just one.

The most devs can do is perma ban you from their forums. They can't prevent you from writing reviews or anything.

Thats what I said, if multiple devs ban you from their hubs, you get a community wide ban. Which means its a pretty risky thing considering more devs are out there doing it. If they realize they can scare people into not giving neg reviews anymore by starting to perma ban anyone from all of Steam, each negative review or negative feedback you leave increases your chance that you get a community wide ban.

Steam is not going to step in if the game company decides to moderate their own forums as long as there is not a major issue.

Making negative personal posts is never going to end well on their forums.

Because the internet as a whole is not a democracy. It never have been, ever. The games forums are policed by the devs and they have full power over there. Valve has no say about what happen there or how things are handled. If the devs think you're either disruptive or are a threat to their bottom line then you'll get the short end of the stick.

Simple.

Valve will only take action against Devs that violate their TOS. Domina was a game that Valve had removed from Steam completely because the dev there abused the privilege of having their game on the store and used update announcements to post trans hate and other such crap.

When it comes to forum moderation, Valve have no desire to step in. I can't blame them, because if devs want to go through and be genuinely terrible about how they handle criticism, their game will will simply fail and poor moderation is merely a symptom of a bigger issue.

I don't see a need for Valve to step in, personally.

It was five years ago. I can't remember the exact thing I said in their discord. :P I do know that I came to the steam discussions and mentioned that the dev had a moderator team that made fun of people and was generally a troll, and that the dev told the moderators to go ahead and ban when I fought back against the bad behavior.

1) Actually, it usually tells a story. But not always. If you're someone who goes around fighting corruption, for example. You could end up finding all the bad players, try to protest them, and then be ejected from each one. Does that mean you're a bad person?

2) Well, as I said to the above quote, the discussion ban was 5 years ago. I only remember the gist of it. But hey if you guys wanna try and claim my one and only ban 5 years ago totally makes me "that guy", sure, whatever.
