Question about steam gift cards
i've been wondering this for a while but I didnt want to bother people but it's better safe then sorry

Are steam friends allowed to pay you using Steam gift cards (digital) as payment for art commissions?

Ive seen a lot of different responses, mainly being either "Yeah you can" to "Since it's not for that it's really something that can get you banned but steam wont provide support if you get scammed" to "It's not allowed"

Context is a steam/game forum friend wants to pay me for a thumbnail I did for them, but I don't have any direct way of getting money sent (Kofi, paypal) and we live in different countries

Is paying someone through steam gift cards allowed? Is there a rule against it i'm not aware of?

In Steam's point of view all of these gift cards are "Gifts".

If you want to sell your art for steam gift cards you probably can, there is probably some rule making it not allowed but I don't think they would care.
Just know that you can't get any support if somebody fails to pay or charges back their purchase.

I don't see a problem with this personally. But, do know that commercial activity within the forums are forbidden. So, if you start advertising your work left and right on steam in exchange of gift cards. Do expect a forum ban coming your way. A warning if you're lucky.

In worst case they lock your account. They may also nuke your profile if you advertise on it too much.

There are a multitude of reasons why someone might obtain a gift cards. How or why your friends send you gift cards is between you and your friends.

Thanks for the info/reply, although in general I don't plan on "advertising" things on the forums (Just seems like a really obnoxious practice) its good to know regardless
