Death
What are my options for my Steam account(s) when I die?

Do I need to delete or request they be deleted prior to my death?

Can I legally will my account(s) to other people for them to use and enjoy all the games that I have purchased and own?

Will my account(s) simply be deleted after a certain period of inactivity?

What are my legal options and what considerations do I need to consider regarding this asset of mine?

I have already made arrangement for the physical game media I purchased years ago and want to make arrangements for ALL of my Steam purchases as well.

I'm sure that some reading this will weight in with their own thoughts but I am seeking an official response from Valve as I will need to LEGALLY make arrangements with them if I have any legal options.

If someone from Valve does read this and has viable feedback perhaps they can respond directly and not in this thread unless their response will help everyone considering end of life issues.

Thank you for your consideration(s).

when you die, the account simply becomes inactive.

the account cannot be traded, gifted, willed, etc. per the SSA you agreed to. you will not get a response from valve about this, they do not post on the forums for various reasons.

Nothing. You do not own the account(s), Steam does. You have no right to give it away or anything like that. Giving an account away is a violation of the Steam policies you agreed to. Your account will simply become inactive.

I'm sure there are better things for you to care about than a silly video game platform.

INAL....

There is nothing for you to will because you don't own anything on the platform.

Legally... the games are licensed to the account. The one in control of the account has access to those licenses. Currently, that is you.

The account is owned by Valve. You are a user of that account. Your only named relationship with the account may be that of a payment provider. Outside of that, your ability to log in with the necessary credentials is what grants you access to the account and all that it is licensed.

Perhaps in the future, someone else may log into the account with correct credentials. Then, they will have access to everything on it.

There are no options. Your owned PC will become abandoned upon death like your own account will be permanently inactive. That's it, they legally don't own anything from your account that may violate SSA section C.

Of course nothing can stop you from providing the credentials and all information needed to your heirs, and nothing is stopping them from using the credentials. And it's not like Valve is constantly querying for death certificates, so no way to really know about the status of users.

Plus maybe decades in the future the status quo is different. These issues will come up big when gen-x and millenials age out of existence, and the status quo doesn't always get its way.

If you ensure a next of kin has all the information needed to prove ownership of the account, then they can use it.

Yes, all the legal blurb and all the articles you see will tell you differently. But I speak from experience from when my father died. In fact, Steam support were far more helpful with recovering that account than PayPal were with closing his PayPal account.

Just give it a family member and tell no one... Seriously no one will know for 120ish years anyway.. If no one blatantly says anything no one would ever know..

Credit cards change all the time so no proof unless some one does something dumb like talk about it on the forums after the fact..
